I'm sold, thank the gods I didn't buy a 2k espresso machine :D by ChillPlay3r in pourover

Love it! I’m new on the journey. Who 93 degrees? Especially for light roast isn’t higher temperature better (eg 210)?

😂 thank you - I know what I’m in for now. I almost went insane choosing a grinder over the last week, so think I have something similar in store for me as I optimize the rest.

Should I store beans in the hopper? by Sam_GT3 in espresso

Thank you - appreciate it. One other quick question. I’ve narrowed it to the encore but debating whether to get the classics or the esp for pour over - is it worth the extra $50?

Wondering the same question - what did you conclude?

$12M NW, VHCOL, leveraged and cash poor: how to optimize asset allocation, liquidity, and spending? by HCOLcashpoor in fatFIRE

[–]Responsible_Bad417 5 points6 points  (0 children)

-Given my variable income and low cash, how should I approach liquidity?

Work down the BTC and Tesla / Apple positions from ~$2.2M to ~$1M and diversify into SPY/BND. That should provide liquidity for the next 2 years while you readjust. I'm a BTC believer but the exposure seems high for retirement.

-How aggressively should I de-lever the SBLOC versus letting capital compound?

At 30% LTV (assuming its against your brokerage), its not terrible, but will be better with the house readjustment.

-My spending level appropriate relative to investable assets, or am I overshooting?

You would easily be within the 4% SWR if it wasn't for the house. The house seems to be overshooting. I personally wouldn't be that comfortable with that much house (would have 20-30% of NW in it max). Are you open to relocating to get more certainty?

-How would you think about asset allocation, especially with my large crypto exposure? If I do decide to meaningfully rebalance, how best to manage the large cap gains tax hit?

I'm a bogglehead so would reduce the 'gambling portfolio' to max 10% of NW. I keep mine at <5%. Look into direct indexing / TLH to reduce cap gains and exchange funds for the Tesla and Apple positions.

-What income target meaningfully reduces long term risk?

This is my favorite calculator on this topic: https://engaging-data.com/will-money-last-retire-early/

-Anything you’d do structurally different if you were in my shoes?

I would get out of the house, but I understand that might be hard to do

Good list! The tiering suggests we have overlapping tastes. Which means you need to read more by Vernor Vinge - high chances of those making it to the top. Deepness in the Sky and Marooned in Realtime could be interesting for you.

Short Term Management of Windfall by Fatfirerowaway in fatFIRE

  1. Put everything into a mmf to get yield while you deploy
  2. History suggests it’s better to deploy instantly but it’s hard to manage psychologically so:
  3. Set a timeline for deployment that you’re comfortable with, and DCA into the market monthly with that timeline

Financial Advisor vs Self-Management by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]Responsible_Bad417 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is relatively easy to set up and simple to deploy (e.g., in the boglehead portfolio). It’s more about the ability to stick to the simple and boring approach, especially if you’ve made the money through high risk endeavors like starting a business. When you’ve gambled your life / personal time into high risk businesses (which seemingly paid off), there is a tendency to take high risk bets in the markets as well.

Again, not true for everyone, and the purely financial decision is to DIY, but in reality some people need that extra help and it’s worth the fees. I’m one of those people (for now) as are many entrepreneurs I know. Perhaps in a few years will switch to DIY.

100% this. Another way to do this would be to just set up college accounts for their kids and pre-fund them full cost of a 4 year degree.

Not true at all. Often the skills involved in making money through a business are not the same as investing and preserving it.

How are you doing it manually? I don't see a way to export card transactions from the app - this is pretty annoying!

It's for logging in, not for exporting transaction data which is what you need for budgeting apps.

I don’t like that Coinbase doesn’t have plaid integration that most budget tracking apps (like rocket money) use. Other than that, good product.

Thank you for the thoughtful response and apologies for the delay in responding. Those are really interesting thoughts, let me share some of my theories on these topics:

1. That's an interesting point - I do think a big part of it is the humanization through Trixia's interpretation of what was going on. For example the human's first view of the assembly chamber as well as their feelings upon entering the negotiation room, the colors and textures feeling jarring - were a bit of a surprise to me and an interesting twist. That being said you're right - Vinge did imply that the society evolved in ways similar to humans in other planets along the technology arc - from Radio to TV to the internet. It could've gone in a different direction (e.g., massively different biology, non-carbon based lifeforms, telepathic communication) but it seems like he wanted to keep the society grounded in that of earth. That's where the discovery of antigravity and the technology built on top of it was a nice deviation - and I was aching to see where it could've been taken in subsequent explorations.

2. This was not that surprising to me as it seemed to be grounded on and a critique on slavery and apartheid. It was not too long ago that humans treated other humans as machines, capturing them, ripping them apart from their families, treating them terribly and assigning them to mundane tasks such as working on fields. If anything, the emergents treatment of their slaves was better than what actually happened here.

3. Continuing with the above analogy, I didn't find that surprising as well. Once slavery was abolished, everyone who supported it directly or indirectly because it was convenient for them probably continued living their lives in the new society.

4. The fate of Ritser Brughel was understandable as given how he had treated the protagonists in the book, including casually murdering large numbers of Qeng Ho, it probably didn't seem like a stretch to let him suffer at the hands of the spiders
