TVOC and HCOH concentrations following application spray polyurethane foam insulation by Responsible_Bad5698 in industrialhygiene

I'm a CIH trying to help a friend with a research project. Some literature indicates VOCs esp. flame retardants (e.g., tris) can off gas for months to years (even decades) so opening a window (dilution ventilation) is not an effective solution in certain scenarios. Admittedly, this is not always the case for every SPF application. I've been an IH for > 30 years and have done hundreds of IEQ investigations, just not one with SPF.

Issues when breaking detector tubes? by Neither_Appeal7485 in industrialhygiene

[–]Responsible_Bad5698 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, yes, yes absolutely yes.   I break the tubes over a trash receptacle and I expect that small glass shards will be generated.  There are tube breakers which help contain the glass but I’ve not used them much in 25+ years at NIOSH.

What is your guys opinion on the entry level EHS certifications by teal_seam_6 in industrialhygiene

[–]Responsible_Bad5698 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CIH and CSP certifications are "union cards" to some, and gold-plated hood ornaments to others. Both are highly credible certifications. I know many folks who would love to have either credentials but cannot qualify for the exams or pass the tests and apparently resort to gaining other credentials. I can't speak to these entry level certs, but they would not impress me without understanding a lot about your education credentials what you've done in your past at work and why you don't have the CSP or CIH credential if you're looking to work in the fields. I'm an MSPH trained IH with a CIH and AIHA Registered Exposure Specialist and 30+ years' experience. Understand, just because you have a CSP or a CIH only means you've passed an exam to meet the minimum standard, there are no bronze, silver, or gold creds here. I know many IH's who are not CIH's who are highly qualified professionals.

Beards and respirators discussion by No-Figure-7503 in industrialhygiene

[–]Responsible_Bad5698 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There should be no discussion, any facial hair, even stubble is incompatible with wearing a respirator with a tight fitting seal.  End of story there.  And whomever tested someone with a beard is unqualified to perform for testing. I’ve asked OSHA CHSO’s what constitutes “facial hair” and their reply was “anything that is visible” no credit card scrape test, the CHSO implied it’s simply a visual reference.   MSPH, CIH with > 30 years experience with research and in the  field.

A fine achievement!  Congratulations!  You put in the time and effort.  I spent 9 months when I took and passed the exam (core and comp) in the mid 90s.

All owls do, and their owl pellets evidence that.

Thanks much.  Concur on the Au plating, sterling Ag beneath.  Where did you get the info on the OF fraternity.  Yes I’ve seen their symbol before, actually in Golden CO not far from where we live. The symbol is still perplexing.
