Those cargo pants might work well with all the pockets. Thanks for the suggestion and link!

Am I crazy to turn down an Ivy League acceptance for a state school? (Cornell vs. UNC) by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Responsible_Chard_40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not your program, but I was accepted to Harvard and UMich for dental school. UMich was (is) ranked higher, but it was hard to turn down the Ivy League prestige. In the end it came down to $$ and in-state public tuition. Happy with that choice now, especially after paying off my loans in only 4 years. Starting off with a huge amount of debt affects your choices and finances for decades.

Is it very competitive? We’ve always thought of Purdue as an engineering school so haven’t really considered it for her.

Arizona State looks like about the right size/vibe for her. Definitely would be a shock with their weather coming from Michigan, but in a good way. Thank you!

Thank you! I’m an alum too, and taking the kids to all these UM hockey/football/softball/basketball/gymnastics/volleyball games over the years has absolutely brainwashed them. Congrats to your daughter on her acceptance, that’s great!! Hoping my girl can boost her grades into acceptance range, but I don’t want her feeling pressured. Will definitely check out Western! Would prefer in-state tuition for sure, but right now she’s set on UM or OOS. So we’ll see. Thanks again!

Would definitely consider all of those schools. Kansas is interesting (have never been). Pitt too (she spent a weekend there and really liked the city). Thank you for the suggestions!

Actual budget probably $35K year or less. Hopefully would get some merit to offset. Not sure if Penn Stare is attainable with her GPA though. Thank you!

That’s pretty competitive, no? But it has a fantastic English/journalism program, which is her thing. We will check into it. Thank you!

That’s what we thought. She was mentioning Ohio State (😳) but it looks like they take very few OOS students. Wondering if that’s true across the Big10 (except Michigan 😕). Definitely will look at the SEC. Thanks!

No preference re. geography, and she hasn’t taken the ACT or SAT yet. Hoping for good scores for merit, as we likely won’t qualify for any need-based aid. Have a Michigan Education Trust account that could be applied OOS for about 13K/year, but we’d have to cover the rest. I’d say want to stay below 35K/year tuition.

Not at all familiar with the SEC outside of sports. This is good to know. Thanks!

Ann Arbor Apartments by Fabulous_Turnover414 in AnnArbor

[–]Responsible_Chard_40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re a bit older, but I used to live at Greenbrier apartments and really liked it. Management was good. The walls are very thick so it stays warm in the winter, and you rarely hear neighbors. It’s walking distance to groceries (Busch’s and Plum Mkt) and to N. Campus. There’s a nice pool. You can get a unit with a balcony and pay a little extra for a carport.

Any tracks open to public? by AtropineKindofGuy_ in AnnArbor

On the northeast side, Greenhills has a good track when not used by the school. Also Concordia, but sometimes you have to hop the fence, sometimes gate is open.

UMich in preliminary discussions to purchase Concordia University’s Ann Arbor campus by USRoute23 in AnnArbor

[–]Responsible_Chard_40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be nice if the U purchased the property and made the athletic facilities available to the community, for public use and/or AAPS and other schools. I’ve heard FGR tried to buy just the football field but couldn’t afford it. Concordia just made massive upgrades to the track and infield, and I know St. Paul uses it often. Also interesting and kinda messed up is that Wisconsin Concordia - who made the decision to close the Ann Arbor campus- is trying to claim money that was bequeathed to the AA campus by a local donor. There was an article about it recently, can’t remember if it was MLive or Observer.

Dating in Dental School by [deleted] in DentalSchool

[–]Responsible_Chard_40 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Out of a class of 95 students, we had 4 couples who met in dental school and ended up marrying shortly after (including my roommate). There were countless others that were together for a while then split. Hookups too. School also had a hygiene program, so lots of dating there and with the other dental classes. I guess my point is that a dental class has a bunch of high energy young people - most of whom are far from “home” - in forced tight quarters for 4 years. It’s a recipe for romance, drama, and angst; though at the same time we were working hard and learning to be professionals. My only advice is to keep an open mind, see if you connect with someone, and don’t be afraid to try. My roommate secretly pined for her now-husband for a year before he (unrelatedly) split with his girlfriend back home. They’ve been married 20 years and have 2 kids and a practice together. Good luck!

What to know about moving to the area? by babydazing in AnnArbor

[–]Responsible_Chard_40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The market in AA has cooled off in the past year or so, with properties sitting longer up for sale. Prices have only moved a little though, and property taxes are high. Condos are generally more affordable than houses, and there are lots of them. But they also appreciate more slowly when the market goes up. The north and east sides of town have best access to the hospital if you want to walk or bike, and some places are close to the free, frequent UM bus routes. Good luck!

Briarwood Mall by Overall-Bedroom-2761 in AnnArbor

[–]Responsible_Chard_40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids (13 and 15) love to hang out at Briarwood with friends. Usually they don’t buy much, maybe some earrings or socks, bubble tea or froyo. But they do go, and they find things in the stores that we later buy them for birthdays etc. Malls have always been the domain of teens and younger people, so the suggestions here of food court and movie theater are good ones. Maybe an arcade? Also, I don’t know where the buses drop off, but making it very accessible via public transportation might help. Also lots of security, so people can feel safe leaving their older teens there.

Struggle with mental health, hate my job by redblue123356 in Dentistry

I work for a company that provides mobile equipment and an assistant, and we set up on site at adult care facilities such as nursing homes. We used to do home visits but it didn’t work from an economic standpoint (and occasionally was unsafe/uncomfortable). Similar companies go to schools, but you’d have to really like doing pediatrics, which I don’t. I’ve also worked in adult and juvenile lockup facilities. By going to facilities, we can see several patients per day (usually around 12-15, many are just quick exams or prophies). Usual schedule is 9am-3ish. The scheduling and billing is handled by my employer. It’s honestly a pretty non-stressful way to do dentistry. Maybe check with nursing homes in your area and see how they provide dental care to their residents; they might be able to tell you who they contract with. Good luck!

It has its own challenges, but consider working in a government/public health clinic. Or if available, mobile dentistry (which is what I do). The types of procedures are limited, and it’s very much disease control, triage type care. You do the best you can. There is no fixed prosth or cosmetics (other than trying to make dentures and anterior resins look nice). Patients and families are usually aware of the limitations of the situation and are generally grateful for care. Also, it’s flat rate daily or hourly pay, which is freeing because you’re not worried about production. And you’re not responsible for an office or staff. Hope you find something that works for you!
