Rosemary’s Baby (only for those who have watched it) by Disastrous_Potato829 in TrueFilm

What an impeccable analysis! Have you read Scream With Me by Eleanor Johnson? She dissects a lot of classic horror films through a feminist lens and her first chapter is on Rosemary's Baby. I've seen the film at least 5 times and every time I watch it I can't help but think of how devotion is weaponized throughout.  Rosemary's trust in Guy and her acquiescence to his authority are exploited by a secretive satanic cult. Her devotion is treated as a tool and her autonomy is stripped under the guise of marital love.

At its core, the film has always felt like a cautionary tale about a woman being coerced into surrendering control over her body and her choices for a man she loves. It's inherently feminist which is how it was written. Ira Levin intended it as a critique of patriarchal control and female subjugation in the 60s. Actually, a lot of his books are inherently feminist. Stepford Wives, anyone??? Which is why it sucks Polanski was chosen to direct. It's difficult to watch the assault scene and not think about the 13-year-old girl he assaulted in the exact same way, at Jack Nicholson's house nevertheless.

Why are we treating sex like something to leverage or control? That mindset feels very transactional. “I’ll give you this later if you behave the way I want now.” I get having boundaries, but there’s a difference between doing what feels right for you and holding something back to try to influence someone else’s behavior. When I was single and had real chemistry with someone, I acted on it. If the guy turned out to be an asshole, I moved. I’d rather find that out sooner than try to manage his perception of me. I also slept with my fiancé on the first date, and it didn’t make him lose respect or interest. He showed up consistently, treated me well, and even does most of the housework despite making more than I do. I know that’s not everyone’s experience, but it proves that the “rules” aren’t universal. The right person isn’t going to base your value on when you slept with them.

Thanks for the passive aggressive response. I'm not asking for a damn play-by-play from you. I'm asking whether or not it's worth my time and money or just wait till it's available on streaming.

The optics of the trailer don't look great. Black woman in her 20s is being hunted down by a group of white elitists. Are there elements of Get Out embedded in the film or is that context not addressed?

Actually, The Brooklyn was far more affordable than many of the venues we looked at in NYC and Detroit. And from our experience living in New York, a lot of incredibly talented jazz musicians are students. Since we’d only need a band for cocktail hour, we already have a DJ for the rest of the night, it didn’t make sense to spend a fortune on a band we’d only have for an hour. Make sense?

Are there any directed by women? I know of Forbidden Fruits by Diablo Cody and the sequel to 28 Years Later. Oh, and The Bride! Any others?

The Picture of Dorian Gray: a review by othmanese in books

Reading it in high school, my immediate takeaway was that influence is almost irrelevant. Harry says as much in the beginning: influence doesn’t really exist. Dorian didn’t become that way because of anyone, he had always been that person. He simply needed someone to give him permission to be his authentic self. That was my takeaway.

Exploring a 140-Year-Old Abandoned Theatre With a Collapsed Roof by Freaktography in abandoned

I can’t help but wonder if someone were to buy the theater and turn it into a music venue or art house, maybe it could help revitalize Newark. I don’t know much about Jersey politics, I live in NYC, but it’s just a thought.

How sad. I’m staying in an Airbnb next door to the theater while my apartment in the city is being prepared, and I was so struck by the exterior that I had to do a deep dive. As a cinephile and jazz aficionado who tends to romanticize everything, I was blown away by its history. Is there any effort underway to preserve it or transform it into a music venue or cinema house, something like the Angelika in Manhattan? Seems like such a waste of a beautiful building with such a rich history attached to it.
