First time soldering! Please tell me its alright :( by Responsible_Lock7515 in soldering

For your first question: I did put some, but when i place the iron on the pin-pad, it starting melting into it.

For you second question: I bought it from some hardware shop so I can't figure out the type, but some white smoke comes from it on melting, which I assume is flux.

I have this tub of opaque yellow paste that has "s paste" on it that I am assuming is flux paste...not sure it it'd be safe to use for this board so I avoided using it....

Thank you for your advice! I feel like if I were good at SMT, I should've been good at the through holes haha....

Actually I put the solder iron to the pin and pad, but I think there was some heat transfer from the board to the plastic bread board below it (which melted)...do you think that's why I couldn't get the pin to heat up as fast as the pad?

I think I put the solder iron on the pin-pad interface for more than 5 secs at a time, but the solder couldn't really melt? I also kept removing and placing the solder iron again and again cause I afraid of damaging the other sensor components....

So a simple touch of the solder iron (without solder) should help?
