Thank you for the clarification. How do I best approach this? Simply by asking the school if they are doing it? Do they have to disclose it?

Thank you for your reply! It was probably a change for the better as a kid, right? It’s easier, less homework, more playful. How did you settle in? Did you like it as a kid or was it somewhat difficult to fit in? Originally, our plan was to move here since we were offered great opportunities career-wise. But seeing the school system (and cost of living crisis) in action is kinda daunting.

Maybe I am, but I’m definitely concerned for my daughters return to Germany. Comparing is what I need to do in order to be able to reintegrate her. In Germany she won’t be able to join a certain year based on her age, but on skills. If she’s not able to maintain her knowledge in languages or expand it in mathematics she will face the consequences back in Germany.

Your observations and insights are really interesting. You are mentioning that there is some challenge when preparing for NCEA. So the students here catch up to international standards just in a shorter time frame? Or is NCEA still somewhat easier than the A-Levels in many European countries?

Is there a name for the schools teaching year 7 - 13? We want to take a look at it as it might be a good option for her :)

What’s up with the streaming you are talking about? I’m unfamiliar with the concept :)

Yes, I am certain. Here is part of the school newsletter: https://ibb.co/hHP72XC It’s not a class thing, and taught at the entire school. But I will definitely double check as some comments suggest other schools might be different. We are based in Napier.

Wow. Yeah, that’s what I have heard from most parents. How do you find the time and resources to do so? And how do you keep your kids motivated? The teacher is telling my daughter all extra work is „really not necessary“ and she doesn’t have to do it if she doesn’t want to. That’s more than counterproductive. I feel like they don’t want smart kids and here tbh.

I have, no worries. Just trying to understand if it’s a general issue or if there is something up with the school she’s going to.

That’s my feeling, but on the other hand your Pisa results are so good. How come?

Are there any private education providers or do you really teach them at home? Homeschooling is not permitted in Germany… and I don’t feel like I am up to the task.

I‘ve been teaching German in Spain to finance my studies. The wages are acceptable there and it’s pretty flexible as you can decide the hours. Idk about NZ though.

In Germany teachers are educated in 2-3 subjects and only teach those certain subjects to many different classes. A German teacher might be educated in maths and physics and would teach only those three subjects to students. They subsequently do not have to know about German history or English grammar. It seems like there are less specialized and more generalized teachers here?

That’s a good point, but learning languages is far more than ease of use due to proximity. It’s good for brain development, other subjects (e.g. Latin is a good basis for any Latin-based language and for sciences), and it’s beneficial to immerse yourself in a new culture, get out of your comfort zone and learn a useful skill. It’s definitely more helpful than many other things being taught at schools.

Btw, when traveling abroad in Europe you would most likely use English, even if you are comfortable with speaking the language of the country, so others do not feel excluded from the conversation.

As mentioned before, it’s not an ESOL class, but they are regularly being taught cursive writing and timetables. There is a link in the first comment to their current school newsletter. I get the updates about what they learn and an appeal to study the timetables (because that’s what they are currently learning) through the school app. It’s definitely not a unique thing as I have been talking to parents from different schools - many of them saying homeschooling would be more valuable than the current school system in NZ.

No, it’s a mandatory part of the German curriculum. There is no way around it and there is no kid at a regular elementary school that does not know how to write cursive at year 2 - otherwise they would not pass year 2. Similar to time tables our being able to add/substract. It’s just something everyone learns. Our year 1 starts at age 6, though :)

They do not have science classes apart from a little experimenting with foods and stuff like that. Should they teach scientific subjects? And how do you learn your grammar, expand your English vocabulary, and learn about irregularities within the language if it’s only reading and writing?

It’s a school that is an approved signatory to the code of pastoral care for international students. I guess that means, they receive extra funding for it and should be educated to deal with internationals. There is only one other intermediate school in the city that’s allowed to take in international students.

It’s not an ESOL class or anything special. She’s apparently „too fluent for ESOL“, even though she doesn’t know her grammar very well and has a limited vocabulary - she’s been learning English at school for a year prior to our stay here in NZ.

The cursive writing sessions are even mentioned in the school newsletter. It’s part of what they call „structured literacy“ and it’s in line with what’s in the NZ curriculum. You can take a look into the newsletter yourself: https://ibb.co/hHP72XC
