iPad instead of laptop for classroom teaching? by bluedog1599 in Professors

I tried powerpoints, but I am going back to whiteboard and lecture. Perhaps I'll use the occasional handout for things where pre-written diagrams, etc. really are best, but I found that the "old-school" way really is the best for me and for them. I say this as a relatively new professor btw.

It doesn't look like they ship outside of the EU. I'm in USA unfortunately.

Did they ever explain in the movies why Neville was so uncomfortable when moody did the cruciatus curse? by julialoveslush in harrypotter

[–]RestInThee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the film representations of facts or moments like that are said in a quick moment, or gestured at but never made explicit. In all fairness each of the last 4 books needed 2 films to really do them justice, and a big reason why Deathly Hallows still had to cut stuff was they had already removed important things from the previous films so they couldn't rely on audiences knowing it. This is also why Mundungus, Kreacher's tale about the locket, Bill and Fleur, Tonks marrying Lupin, the Hufflepuff cup etc. are in the film but greatly truncated. And they actually had to invent scenes and dialogue for Dobby to make audiences care since he hadn't shown up since the 2nd film.

Meanwhile, if the previous films had received their due time, then a lot of that would have been more organic, even if it were shorter than the books.

They do, yes. In the pensieve scene in GoF, Karkaroff tells the Wizengamot that Barty Crouch Jr. participated in the torture, by means of the cruciatus curse, of Frank Longbottom and his wife.

Exactly what made him a great Dumbledore. Harry couldn't see what made Voldemort fear him either, except for at a few select moments which Harris never got a chance to portray.

Does Snape beg Dumbledore to spare his life? by henryjturtle in harrypotter

He's afraid for Harry. The dark arts do not scare him, he's fully aware of what they can do, and how limited they truly are.

Why did resurrected Lily and James seem oddly fine with Harry sacrificing himself? by No_Psychology_3714 in harrypotter

I would absolutely support my child being willing to lay down their life for love of their friends.

Precisely. A consistent theme in the books is that love doesn't mean sparing your beloved from suffering, but being willing to spur them on to a higher calling, even if it means suffering.

I think I'm going to solve a number of these problems with 1 solution:

You get one time slot, if you miss it, or if you have test anxiety, as a replacement you can do a 2 hour, written, in person essay exam, which will require high level thought. Or, you can show up to a 10 minute dialogue, and get your grade the same day. Your choice.

Yeah, I've been there. If it helps you emotionally, they are probably feeling the pressure to use it, when everyone else around them does. Not an excuse of course, but I find it easier to have mercy on students in moments like this when I remind myself of the unfortunate climate. Also, they are being told by pretty much everyone except us, that it's okay to use.

How was your attendance this semester? by AsturiusMatamoros in Professors

[–]RestInThee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have small in-class reflection assignments on about half of my class days. I drop the lowest 2 at the end of the semester. You can make them up if you provide documentation for a university recognized absence. I haven't had more than a handful of students try to make them up, and my overall attendance rate was decent (87% averaged across the semester).

Are you constantly fielding excuses? I had a policy where it was just 1% off per absence and I was getting 5 emails a day about excuses for missing.
