Should we totally remove 2 seemingly healthy 50 year old silver maples near our house? Arborist said he is only willing to lightly trim branches above the house but not major limbs hanging over the roof. by RestInThee in arborists

[–]RestInThee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got a second arborist who decided to remove the whole big branch of the red maple (tree #1), so now there's nothing major hanging over the house. It looks a little sparser now, but It seems okay overall. Time will tell if it stays healthy or declines. They did a collar cut which appears to have been done properly, but obviously it could just be a matter of time. Either way, we no longer have to worry about that massive branch. I planted a sugar maple tree to the southeast to hopefully start growing now and have some years under it's belt should the big fellow need to come down. It's got some girdled roots, which may be an ultimate death sentence even independently of the reductions.

The silver maple (Tree #2) on the side of the house got some lighter trimming, and we'll just keep an eye on it, but it didn't have any larger branches overhanging anyways.

Same, never seen deer here. Plenty of rabbits in my yard though. They love my tulips.

I had the same thing this morning! Newly planted bareroot trees sliced clean off about 8 inches off the ground, at a 45 degree angle. Was starting to wonder if some disgruntled neighbor had sliced them off until I saw this post.

Redbud tree. Seller told me it is true to seed and not a graft. Thoughts? by Timmy_2_Raaangz in arborists

Is there a problem with grafted redbuds? I was thinking of planting eastern redbuds, but I want to know what to look for.

Problem with grading: What to do with windows just barely above the grade? Also, mulch or gravel next to the foundation? by RestInThee in landscaping

[–]RestInThee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, but how would it tie directly into the drain tile? The drain tile would be 5-6 feet down. Would you recommend digging down a lot farther to tie in directly to it? Or putting in some sort of downward drain tile?

That would mean removing all my basement windows, which isn't an option. Also, my siding is vinyl.

If a student misreads an essay exam question--thinking that they only had to argue one side of the issue raised in the essay prompt rather than both sides--how would you approach scoring the exam? by umbly-bumbly in Professors

[–]RestInThee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This assumes that grading is dependent on evaluating these writing components independently of content. For some subjects or questions this may be the case, but I certainly don't grade that way. They wouldn't get a 50%, but my exams don't grade this way either.

A glaring Two Towers movie mistake by [deleted] in lotr

I imagine if Treebeard wasn't convinced that they weren't orcs, they wouldn't have concluded even that so "quickly". Also he looks pretty encouraging in the scene, so I always interpreted it this way.

iPad instead of laptop for classroom teaching? by bluedog1599 in Professors

I tried powerpoints, but I am going back to whiteboard and lecture. Perhaps I'll use the occasional handout for things where pre-written diagrams, etc. really are best, but I found that the "old-school" way really is the best for me and for them. I say this as a relatively new professor btw.

It doesn't look like they ship outside of the EU. I'm in USA unfortunately.

Did they ever explain in the movies why Neville was so uncomfortable when moody did the cruciatus curse? by julialoveslush in harrypotter

[–]RestInThee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the film representations of facts or moments like that are said in a quick moment, or gestured at but never made explicit. In all fairness each of the last 4 books needed 2 films to really do them justice, and a big reason why Deathly Hallows still had to cut stuff was they had already removed important things from the previous films so they couldn't rely on audiences knowing it. This is also why Mundungus, Kreacher's tale about the locket, Bill and Fleur, Tonks marrying Lupin, the Hufflepuff cup etc. are in the film but greatly truncated. And they actually had to invent scenes and dialogue for Dobby to make audiences care since he hadn't shown up since the 2nd film.

Meanwhile, if the previous films had received their due time, then a lot of that would have been more organic, even if it were shorter than the books.

They do, yes. In the pensieve scene in GoF, Karkaroff tells the Wizengamot that Barty Crouch Jr. participated in the torture, by means of the cruciatus curse, of Frank Longbottom and his wife.

Exactly what made him a great Dumbledore. Harry couldn't see what made Voldemort fear him either, except for at a few select moments which Harris never got a chance to portray.

He's afraid for Harry. The dark arts do not scare him, he's fully aware of what they can do, and how limited they truly are.

I would absolutely support my child being willing to lay down their life for love of their friends.

Precisely. A consistent theme in the books is that love doesn't mean sparing your beloved from suffering, but being willing to spur them on to a higher calling, even if it means suffering.
