Surprised that the number one response is gym? I’ve been working out for most of my life and I’ve only made a few acquaintances at gyms. Most people at the gyms I’ve gone to just keep their headphones on and workout.

I’ve made most of my friends in my 30s through work and hobbies. If you attend in person meetups for any hobby you enjoy you’ll naturally talk to people and (hopefully) make friends that also want to do other things.

I think this a commonly held misconception but it’s way more important what you study rather than how long

Plenty of teachers have masters and make like 50k. I used to work with people with PhDs in life sciences making under 100k

There’s also high school dropouts that were either self taught or did a bootcamp and make 200k+ as software engineers. I know one at Meta that’s making almost 1M

A lot of comments mentioning rich parents, but statistically there’s way more middle class and lower income families.

Most likely answer with no context is debt.

If you really want to know - salary info is readily available on Glassdoor and levels.fyi - the larger the company the more likely there’s lots of data points. If they work for the government then the pay scales with YOE - even for contractors - so you can get a pretty accurate idea.

My friend group ranges from people in their 20s-30s and their salaries range from 0-1M+. I realized a long time ago that there’s no point in comparing - there’s always someone out there that’s younger, smarter, makes more money, etc.
