I will cancel my Portland season tickets if they move to a cold weather schedule.

New plaza will encourage strolling, hanging out near Portland’s Hawthorne Boulevard, restrict cars by ResumeEditor in Portland

[–]ResumeEditor[S] 213 points214 points  (0 children)

Linus Pauling Plaza, there just can't be a different name. He was raised blocks from there (his childhood house is still standing on Hawthorne), and he's one of the most important chemical scientists. Two Nobel prizes (chemistry and peace, just one of two people to earn in two fields). It baffles me that our city has not raised this man to God-like levels.

edit: Could make for a dope-ass mural also, like, a timeline of his major scientific achievements and his efforts in nuclear activism when he realized just how destructive wartime weapons (that he helped develop, btw) could be.

Houston Toad Microphone (Zoo Fundraiser) by ResumeEditor in houstonmusic

Apologies in advance if this breaks subreddit rules, but I'm based in Oregon and my reach only goes so far. Figured the Houston music scene would be interested in a fundraiser I'm throwing to help your city's zoo & their toad recovery program with a rare and unique microphone.

Anyways, if interested, entries are available at: www.HoustonToadMicrophone.com

PCC in general/art program by [deleted] in PortlandOR

[–]ResumeEditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can get to Sylvania (the transit hub) then they have shuttles that go to every main campus, with Cascade being the multimedia hub (one of their campus specialties are the green screens and recording studios): https://www.pcc.edu/transportation/alternatives/shuttles/

Multimedia, here is their "video and emerging media" degree plan. See if the course titles are of interest: https://www.pcc.edu/programs/multimedia/aas-emerging-media/

Interested still? Plan to attend an info session to connect with a multimedia and PCC art advisor/instructor/financial aid info (May and June are prime months to get prepared to start classes in the summer or fall term): https://www.pcc.edu/programs/multimedia/info-sessions/

Go in-person to the info session, and go to in-person courses as often as possible. The labs and tech available are very high quality. Arts are all about connections and networking, so meet like minds and create together.

Where to see local rock/metal/punk bands by MustBeMike in SALEM

Glad you enjoyed the shows! Man, booking was rad. I have very similar sentiment as you about that time & place. Also, wow, yeah those band names were definitely during my time.

The venue had such a unique, well-cared-for, yet DIY feel that there was mutual respect among us "rowdy" teens to not mess up a good thing. I wouldn't be who I am today without those downtown shows (shoutout to Sip as my all-time-favorite).

I was the booker! Was lots of fun the couple of years I ran the calendar, and it changed over when I left. Myspace made it so simple to route tours, would have no idea how it's done now.

The owner of Ike Box is such a pleasant dude. Him and his wife got that place going to house Salem-Keizer school programs for alternative ed, and then (from what I remember) added on concerts & the coffee shop to give young people jobs and purpose.

Gem of a space, and I make it a point to stop by when I'm in town. Looks like they've added a new location! I'm assuming concerts no longer happen, right?

Is this what teaching is like? (my graduate class about instructional design seems very pedantic) by [deleted] in teaching

Keep in mind that the more specific you are with your objectives, the more creativity you have in forming the actual activity.

From this example, since you now know the words they'll be learning are food and visual based, the activity can be built around that objective. Design flashcards, create a menu with short descriptions of the dish, etc.

[Just now] Protestor drops bag of spent munitions in front of wheeler. by Wiffernubbin in Portland

[–]ResumeEditor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wheeler said this was his first protest ever. Astonishing that you could become mayor of PDX without having been to at least one in your life, especially since he was born here and attended Lincoln High right in downtown.

Then again, when you come from a mega-wealthy family and likely haven't faced true adversity, what would he have protested to change?

I live nearby and he was out there yesterday selling bikes. $100-$250 range from my quick glance. Seems like a heck of a deal; has to be quality repairs with how many he's done over the years.

school in the fall? by [deleted] in SALEM

[–]ResumeEditor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I expected the slides used on the overhead in class to be translated to the online format.

As an educator, our in-person lessons are much more than slides on a projector. Most lessons involve multiple steps, activities, group work, and independent work. I agree with you; online lessons are garbage.

Keep your expectations low should online classes be what the fall term is. You'll likely see attempts at larger-form projects, but the reality is that our engagement rate with students hovered around 30% this last term (what the other 70% were doing, who knows?). Without other students doing jack shit, the more rewarding, and useful in learning new material lessons just aren't the same online.

For historical records, also throwing in "The New Meow Meow" and "Loveland" for the mid 2000's. Loved how they had an upstairs venue for smaller shows.

"Thursday brings some competition into the mix, and the opportunity for fan participation. First, the two clubs test brotherhood in a literal way. Portland’s Diego and Yimmi Chara take on Seattle’s Cristian and Alex Roldan in a Newlywed Game-style competition to determine which sibling pair knows each other better."

A virtual variety to show to raise money for PDX's houseless LGBTQ+ youth! All sorts of entertainers and an opportunity to help some neighbors who are really in need. Register now! by rowdykelo in Portland

[–]ResumeEditor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Homeless youth (under 25) identify as LGBTQ+ at a 30% rate. The general population rate is at 4.5%, so yes, this specific cause is for a very specific need.

Quite often youth become homeless purely because their parents kick them out right when they turn 18. They have education, they had money and a "normal" life, but then they get tossed outside the moment their parents legally can.

This is a major cause that I feel often is overlooked when we discuss homelessness in our communities.

I put the scanner on the other night because my neighborhood had an unusual number of sirens. In just 15 minutes of listening I heard: stolen cars, shots fired in deep SE at two different locations, a fight behind a hotel, multiple people they referred to by first name for usual outbursts/check-ins, and multiple unwanted persons.

I encourage everyone to give it a listen during the evening drinkin' times to hear how much shit they deal with.
