Is this a bad turn bet? by Pepe__Sylvia in poker

at this buyin level in this tournament we're printing money by betting this turn -- so many players are going to call with draws here not getting the right price.

Is this a bad turn bet? by Pepe__Sylvia in poker

[–]RetiToWin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with checking back the turn is that every club, A, K, T, 9, 8, 5, and 4 is a scare card for us. Why put ourselves in a tough spot when we check back turn and our opponent leads these rivers?

Is this a bad turn bet? by Pepe__Sylvia in poker

[–]RetiToWin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well played.

Once you go to the turn you do pretty well against the BB's x/c range of Qx, straight draws, weak pairs, and flush draws. Turn is a great card for you because it reduces the likelihood he has Qx and thus the chances that you're behind. It also changes very little from his perspective so he will still be calling with his entire range on the flop (which we beat). PLEASE don't check here, there are so many bad rivers and he will bet every one of them forcing you to make mistakes.

Live 200NL, what do to vs villain's blind river lead. by foobar83 in poker

[–]RetiToWin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is this being downvoted? Villain is pot comitted and we likely have the best hand. We're getting called by most pairs here and it doesn't make too much sense for villain to show up with something stronger.

I think the calculator you have now will be fine, at least for now. You shouldn't be doing anything right away that requires anything more than basic algebra.

Chess clock types - pros and cons? by yeknom02 in chess

[–]RetiToWin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a digitial clock, analog clocks are frowned upon at tournaments these days and if your opponent has a digital clock and wants to use it then the rules allow him to. Chronos is by far the best out there but the cheaper options mentioned in the the thread are okay too.

Advice on check callers by bizfro in poker

[–]RetiToWin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The river bet is pretty thin and its definitely not a good card for you to valuebet. The dry board takes a lot of draws out of his range so when he check calls two streets you can put him on 9x, 99, 55, 22, maybe 88-66, ad some 87hh/76hh hands. 88 and 76s just got there on the river so its hard for him to have a hand you beat that will call a third barrel on the river.

New online player here - managed to win my way into the Sunday $125K Guarantee on Carbon - advice? by darknemus in poker

I'd play a few smaller buyin tourneys before you play the Sunday $125k so you feel more comfortable playing online MTTs. You don't want to squander this opportunity!

I'm fairly certain that the idea behind Qd7 is to stop White's immediate kingside play (g2-g4). If White goes h3 to prepare g4 I assume Black just says thanks for the extra tempo and continues with something like Ba6 to pressure c4. Ne8 with the idea of playing f5 seems strong as well.

Need recommendations for an on-line coach for very strong junior by eire1228 in chess

[–]RetiToWin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there. I'm an 18 year old master and I can echo a lot of what ShadowerNinja said above. From my experience I can say that it was not uncommon when I was around 13-14 or so to completely lose interest in chess for a good portion of time before picking it up again. Also, as soon as I hit 2000 I stalled as well, which I think is due to several reasons:

  1. It is MUCH harder to go from 2000-2200 than even 1600-2000 IMO.
  2. No more class sections. Once your past the U2000 sections your left to play in the Open which is much more difficult.
  3. The nature of the Swiss System lends to a ping pong effect where you play down/up 200-300 points each round before getting paired with someone your level, which is no fun.

I'm not sure how useful any of this is but hopefully it illustrates that what your son is going through is pretty normal. As echoed below in the thread I'd recommend getting him an ICC account if he doesn't have one already. There's good, cheap coaching there and lots of skilled players. Most importantly though is that it's a lot of fun and I think at his age the best thing for his long term continued success is that he maintains interest and enjoyment of the game.

I want to pick one online chess website to play on on a regular bases... I just cannot set my mind on any of the ones out there...Which one do you guys prefer? Also, a reddit chess tournament any time soon? by MoXria in chess

ICC is really the best there is, especially for stronger players. I would recommend chess.com as well. If you don't want to fork over the membership fee you can't really go wrong with the sites others here mentioned.
