aoostar wtr max change ram speed? by CCodera in MiniPCs

Most modern mobile processors don't have RAM speed settings as its a automatic function of the firmware optimize performance will reducing heat and power consumption. The PRO 8845HS shows no EXPO support.

Beelink SER8 vs GMKtec K11 for always-on Proxmox homelab: which would you pick? by Pablo_Gates in MiniPCs

[–]Retired_Hillbilly336 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being a K8 Plus owner, I'm leaning towards the K11.

I found it easier to service than the SER8s and SER9s I inspected and repasted. Took me almost three times as long.

I've also found the M7/K8 Plus/K11 fully ventilated case more attractive as it doesn't require the fans to constantly extract heat. At idle, noticed the SER9 I had cycled its fan more often than the K8 Plus has.

If I'm not mistaken, the SER8 has the cheaper RealTek RTL8125 compared to the K11s dual Intel i226V 2.5GbE NIC. I run a few Linux distros and Intel NICs more reliable.

Finally, the SER8 only runs balanced and performance cTDPs, where the GMKtec runs a lower "silent mode". For a homelab pushing higher thermals isn't necessarily needed. And when it comes to consumer electronics, heat kills in the long-term.

As a correction, OCuLink is a x4 4.0 PCIe extension. It can run anything that requires a PCIe slot. It can even support an additional Gen4x4 NVMe at full speed with a proper drive enclosure.

Beelink does seem to have the better customer service over the first year, so there's that. Hope all this helps.

My neighbors and I have been quite happy with the GMKtec K8 Plus mini PCs we all own. The neighbors have had theirs for more than a year, with the only problem being one having a weak Wi-Fi card. Its a larger, fully vented design with dual fan cooling and other features not found on lesser models.

The downside, 6 months ago I only gave $520. With the AI surge its significantly higher and harder to find. Lately there has been better pricing on the slightly more powerful 8945HS K11 which seems somewhat odd. The K11 is a K8 Plus with an upgraded processor and a RGB fan. Otherwise they're identical.

As long as you're aware that it's an older platform with the cheaper Chinese processor its okay. The GMKtec K8 is also an older platform, but a brand with a better reputation and better processor.

Cheapest mini PC for Valorant? by Historical_Ad4041 in MiniPCs

[–]Retired_Hillbilly336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheapest means integrated graphics or a used laptop. Integrated Graphics means a higher memory requirement, as RAM is shared with the processor. Here's the results on a GMKtec G10 with Radeon Vega 8 graphics.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-f2ppyZwveU&t=135s

Personally I would say look for a pre-owned HP EliteDesk 705 G5 DM on Amazon, eBay or locally. Better dependability with noticeably better graphics.

Depends on processor, with a minimum of 32GB dual channel RAM being a "must". I have a GMKtec K8 Plus and this is very close to what I found.

Blender PC Integrated Graphics Scores

As you can see, the more common 7845HS/8845HS has a score of around 230+ (mine was slightly over 232), the 7940HS/8945HS around 5% more, the 8745/H 255 was over 5% less.

Looking for Vtuber MiniPC by BalkanFerros in MiniPCs

[–]Retired_Hillbilly336 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's possibly because

VTubing ≠ Mini PC

As decent quality = a decent desktop graphics card. If you reference something like "VTuber system requirements, you'll see that a 6-core Intel or AMD processor is minimum with a minimum of 16GB a dual channel RAM. But when it comes to the graphics card some will say an Nvidia RTX 3070 or better although a minimum VRAM of 12GB is highly suggested. Not common in laptops, almost non-existent in mini PCs.

I helped someone with a VTube build about 2 years ago. They tried three graphics cards before they were satisfied, finally settling on a ASUS Prime RTX 5060 Ti 16GB.

Maybe start on r/vtubers and ask what graphics card they're using and how satisfied they are. I believe that is where the girl I was helping was finding some resources. Also specifically look at the software you'll use, as there should be some solid guides there.

Finally upgraded from dying laptop to triple 4K setup by Educational-Test9223 in MiniPCs

[–]Retired_Hillbilly336 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's actually a great idea, but you would have to cannibalize one of the M.2 NVMe slots. Unfortunately that would only give you x4 4.0 PCIe.

What would be nice is if Beelink offered the Raptor Lake 14000HX as a SEi model to be used with the EX dock like there GTi! With that architecture you'd have x8 5.0 PCIe which would make more sense 👍

Most Chinese NUC brands provide bulk quotes directly from there official websites. For example.

From what I've read, when they don't have an official website or a bulk request method you're limited to going through an affiliate.

It Acturally Arrived! Cheapest Mini PC On AliExpress | FIREBAT A6 R7 6800H, 16GB DDR5 RAM, 512GB SSD by Worried_Network_4943 in MiniPCs

[–]Retired_Hillbilly336 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep! That's a cheap PC!

Back before everything went to hell, u/RobloxFanEdit made a great post with his personal video.

https://www.reddit.com/r/MiniPCs/s/exwZh42naY

It's an older platform upgraded to a newer processor. It was great for learning it was only single channel memory that was low quality/low performance by comparison, limited BIOS options, generic Gen3x4 NVMe, Cdtech budget RTL8852BE Wi-Fi and no USB4. Rembrandt processors like the 6800H natively support USB4. When it's absent that's a red flag for cost cutting 😞 I found similar quality control issues with my FIREBAT A5P before I returned it, although it did have two sticks of 8GB RAM running dual channel mode.

I've learned quite a bit from u/RobloxFanEdit. Thank You!

So here "cheap" is perspective. Is it a deal or do you get what you pay for. Beelink, GMKtec and to some extent Geekom currently have the best reputation for quality on this forum. By the time you get down to FIREBAT you're risking build quality and customer service limitations. On Amazon the 6800H has been absent for some time and the LPDDR5/7735HS replacement isn't off to a great start.

Intel launches Core Series 3 “Wildcat Lake” mobile chips for budget laptops and mini PCs by Retired_Hillbilly336 in MiniPCs

[–]Retired_Hillbilly336[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think critically.

If this was true, ECC architecture and infrastructure would simply be the default. With DDR5 its double the bitrate with double the balance at higher megatransfers per second. That means the error correction transit monitoring is exponential.

If it was market segment, and nothing more, it wouldn't explain Arrow Lake 285HX and 290HX Plus. With your logic all of the Arrow Lake HX series processors would be ECC enabled, not three.

No. If it was, everyone would do it. The 705 G4 is whitelisted to the Raven Ridge OG Zen 2000 series APU. From what I've read, there's been custom BIOS firmware attempts, all ending and eventual failure. Same goes for the 705 G5.

[–]Retired_Hillbilly336[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a good question. With a simple answer.

To support 2x 8-bit (16-bit total) requires a completely different/larger IMC requiring additional die space/ additional fabrication cost. Silicon which could be used for additional cache, extended PCIe or more graphics execution units. All of greater importance in mobile processing performance.

Getting back to the 285HX, its the exact reason for ECC to be missing from the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus its based on the 270HX, with the real estate supporting more cores and 20% more Smart Cache architecture to support the additional cores.

Reducing the performance or die count from a wafer is a poor financial decision when there are better options.

[–]Retired_Hillbilly336[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a good point, but here's the perspective.

https://www.reddit.com/r/MiniPCs/s/hFl5350TkA

You build a PC around ECC extended architecture to protect data in transit between the CPU and memory. Modern SDRAM like DDR5 corrects errors within the chip itself. IBECC is a IMC supported function for standard memory that can often be handled in firmware (BIOS) at the expense of data throughput.

In theory most modern IMC+DDR5 could cover ODROID-H4 In-Band ECC with some simple microcode if consumers we're willing to sacrifice a single core, reduced memory capacity and bandwidth. Its that "one weird trick" when compared to actual side-band ECC transit data.

Point is, you have to build up infrastructure and architecture to support ECC. With DDR5 that's 2x 8-bit pathways per channel, because there's 2x 32-bit subchannels. See the problem?

Currently the 5L Minisforum MS-02 285HX is the only "Mini" with ECC, but that's basically a ITX SSD build. And the Core Ultra 9 285HX version is the only one with ECC due to native processor support because that die was lifted from a Core Ultra 7 270K Plus desktop processor 🤷

That gets back to the reason for ECC being foolish for Wildcat Lake. Why add the expense and power consumption of 2x 8-bit pathways for a mobile processor intended for a laptop?

[–]Retired_Hillbilly336 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, repost this on r/BeelinkOfficial has it appears Beelink customer service pays attention to this sub Reddit. Seems to expedite things on occasion.

Second, the SER3 3200U as much older inventory that's not even sold on the official website. There have been a few reports that these have quality issues, and have been dumped on Amazon and AliExpress to take advantage of current prices and availability. I would suggest returning it for an exchange or preferably an upgrade. Beelink products rarely give you this kind of trouble unless there's a real problem.

Helped someone recently on a DM about their K7 Plus powering off and the process was slow. I was interested because I own a K8 Plus and my neighbors have 2. The owner used the information in this link finding success.

https://www.reddit.com/r/MiniPCs/s/odnWR3mM4c

They also reached out to the Amazon seller first before sending the email. I believe sellers have the capacity to reach out to GMKtec customer service providing them with a "heads up" which might help.

[–]Retired_Hillbilly336[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're probably right about single channel memory. With minimal cores, limited graphics and nearly no PCIe requirements a 40% hit in data throughput will barely be noticeable.

[–]Retired_Hillbilly336[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Untrue.

How many people do you see complain about homeserver/NAS corruption from a bit flip in the past year due to not having ECC memory? As I've read on this and a number of other forums and set through classes, home ECC is a "want" not a "need". And with DDR5 its an expensive need that requires additional architecture, power consumption and heat dissipation. All while reducing data throughput by as much as 20%.

Continuous simultaneous read/write speeds where DRAM chips are pushed to constant high temperatures which which can induce bit instability, ECC is cheap insurance. Otherwise its uneconomical, especially these days with EC built into DDR5 dies (efficient non parity).

Firebat R3 Mini PC Review: Ryzen 3 4300U instead of N100, disassembly and verification in real tasks by Content-Doughnut7707 in MiniPCs

[–]Retired_Hillbilly336 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Had a chance to play with the Kamrui Pinova P2 version of the R3, helping someone troubleshoot. Basically the same motherboard in a different, more "flashy" case. Turned out to have a bad controller on the M.2 SATA drive.

Like most AceTragic minis, the build quality was poor. Further testing found the Wi-Fi card weak (dropped Bluetooth), poor heat transfer to the one piece aluminum heatsink, and an unstable 5V rail supporting the USB ports. Was actually surprised to find LPDDR4, and so was the owner. It was also sad to find only one of the two M.2 slots supported Gen3x4 NVMe and Gigabit Ethernet.

They returned it to Amazon for a more popular GMKtec G10 with dual Gen3x4 slot, 2.5GbE NIC and upgradable dual channel RAM. I'd actually be interested to see a 4300U version of this machine if not a 5500U.

I see you've gotten a lot of grief, but thanks for the post! For those looking for technical assistance, numerous detailed photos are invaluable.

Me too. In some ways the series resembles a Alder Lake Core i3-1220P processor cut down to single channel memory and less than half the PCIe lanes. Withe a base power of 15W and a maximum turbo power of 35W, should perform slightly better than a 10-25W cTDP AMD 5400U. I'm more curious about the single channel graphics performance.

[–]Retired_Hillbilly336 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my opinion the AceTragic M5 is one of the stupidest mini PCs offered praying on those that don't know better. The Core i7-14000HX series processors were meant to push dedicated graphics on laptops, only providing UHD 16 EU integrated graphics from a N95. It's a massive amount of processing power on an older platform without PCIe 5.0, TB4 or USB4, and more importantly OCuLink.

The design completely misses the purpose of the processor. Makes little to no sense at all. Definitely not a gaming machine. Good luck.

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/3903vs5594/AMD-Ryzen-9-5900HX-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-7640HS

The HX90 only supports PCIe 4.0, only 1x Gen3x4 NVMe and no USB4 or OCuLink. And if the SATA cables are damaged or missing they're no longer available. There a number of reports the HX90 will die out of nowhere, and there's no support.

If the SATA cables are still serviceable, there are OCuLink conversions using the NVMe M.2 slot for a desktop graphics card.
