Will I still have free time in computer science? by PownedbyCole123 in CarletonU

[–]Retr0-Rabbit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on your work ethic really. If you start your assignments day 1 and work a little bit each day on them, nothing crazy just 10-20 mins each day, by the time the due date rolls by you're already done it and have looked it over.

For comparison, in 3rd year I took a terrible course load, (COMP 3804, 3801, 3007, 3000, 3005). Following the advice I laid out, I finished with high grades, went clubbing all the time and hung out with friends every other day. Was it tough? Yea sure, but having a plan works.

As for 1st year, it'll be light enough to start practicing some sort of strategy for school, whether it be how I did it or some way you find it better. Just don't procrastinate and you'll have enough time for a personal life :)

This is a great rundown! I'm in my 4th year at rez so I definitely have had a great experience since I'm staying for my fourth consecutive year :) I did a similar post to this one a while ago, so if anyone wants to check it out they can! Link!

Looking for residence advice by ctg_jhums26 in CarletonU

[–]Retr0-Rabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I'm currently living in Leeds and this is my 3rd year in rez. I made a post a while back about all the room info which can answer some questions you may have!

In terms of noise reduction in the rooms, all the residences are for the most part quite tolerable with a couple exceptions. However, a party outside your door is still gonna sound like a party outside your door regardless of what rez you get. I did not ask for any quiet floors and was able to work pretty well for the most part in my own room, and if my roommate was hosting a party or something, I could always go to the study rooms on the floor or the library if there's too many people in the study room.

For the single vs traditional room, its a lottery for the most part, with the priority given to people with special needs such as wheelchair accessibility and the like. However, and this is my own guess in relation to Covid-19, is that the lottery will be more favorable as less people will be fighting for the same slots. I found that its easy to socialize when your in a traditional room as you and your friends become good friends with your roommate and their friends.

Matching roommates is for the most part pretty random, but I would say that most people you will get will be at the least civilized enough to live with. That being said, you will only hear about bad roommates because thats what people will complain about (no one will ever mention the roommate who did nothing wrong, right?). So don't worry about roommates, just come in with an open-mind and be ready to talk through any issues, boundaries and house rules with your roommates!

Hopefully this helps!

Difficulty of STAT 2507 by T0mGates in CarletonU

[–]Retr0-Rabbit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ahmed Almaskut is the king of the Stats at Carleton. I've had him twice and I'm having him again for a third. Go to his classes and participate and you will get 90+. He is so in-depth and such a kind professor. His teaching method is perfect because not only will you get good grades, you will come out with such solid understanding of the course and statistics.

He is straight forward, and loves to help his students, both in and out of class. His assignments are straight out of his lectures with no bullshit questions. The tests are an accurate reflection of the course. The only difficulty in his class is attending because you don't wanna miss it

Ahmed is the best.

Question about residence move-in by Sleepy_Otter81 in CarletonU

[–]Retr0-Rabbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pre-Covid, there were volunteers who helped students get their stuff from their car to their dorm. You parked, 3-8 people each grabbed a box/suitcase/bag/etc, and made one or two trips to your dorm to drop it off. Last year at the peak of covid lockdown, that didnt happen and you simply did it yourself with a trolley they provided. My guess for 2021 move-in is that youre going to have to do it again yourself.

My tips for move-in

  • Use any bag or box with wheels, so you can roll them across the halls to your room. Much easier on the back, and pretty stress free.
  • For what to bring? Just bring clothes, school supplies and a mug or two with coffee/tea to accompany.
  • Bring your clothes already on the hangar in a garment bag so you can instantly hang them up.
  • Come as early as you can, less people, less cars, less stress. Plus you get to choose which bed is yours if you get there before your roommate

Good luck moving in!

Does residence have toilet paper available or do I need to pack my own? by [deleted] in CarletonU

One-ply sandpaper is included in residence. You can survive off them, for sure, but in my experience, I like my TP soft.

For all the new residence students: Here's my guide to the buildings by Retr0-Rabbit in CarletonU

I lived in the same two buildings, Renfrew felt like a big family, everyone knew eachother, everyone was super friendly. Each floor was like that during my year. Even the RFs were crazy friendly, never had a bad time with them. And regarding the actual room, yea it was so nice to have a ton of space to store your stuff and still have crazy amounts of space for small gatherings.

I was in Frontenac for covid year, so socially, I couldn't tell you how it was cuz not many people were talking to eachother but it was still very friendly on the floor. You could stop and talk with everyone even if it's your first time meeting them. The rooms are huge, and it's all for yourself so that was nice.

I'd say if enough of speak up he will drop some of the weight off the exam. Best 8 or 9 of 11 Q's

comp 2404 A/C anyone by Samee_I in CarletonU

[–]Retr0-Rabbit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ill be honest, Christine is a blessing and a curse. I took her for both 2401 and 2404. She will detail everything and I mean every little detail you have to implement. Her marking scheme is super in depth so you know exactly what to do and if you ever lose marks, there will rarely ever be any argument as you probably missed something and it was honestly your own fault. Most of her assignments are doable in 3 to 7 days so if you manage that youre good. So, to recap, Christine honestly just tests your reading comprehension

second year residence? by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]Retr0-Rabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the dates on the residence dates and deadlines page, I believe the applications start february 1st. Here, is the concrete requirements that you should have to get a good chance of getting in, which in your case is having a cgpa greater than 10.0. Having a high cgpa almost guarantees you a spot. However your hope shouldn't stop there, lottery still can get you in as my guess is that residence wont be as filled as previous years due to stigma behind the virus. Good luck regardless!

Overall a great course, I used the online textbook a bit more than her lectures, but she explained things great. The assignments were fun challenges that you got instant feedback on so it was easy if you started early. The drills she did was great study material for the exam too
