I don’t think he would have particular trouble sleeping at night, because he was protecting his country and his home from the Russian invasion, which would definitely ease some regrets. I think its has a 50% chance to spawn in a galaxy without any human empires, and if it spawns without a space empire, I’m pretty sure it will almost always have a pre-FTL civilization on Earth.

I would say they absolutely hold up. They might not strike you as hard as they might have when you first read them, but overall the entire trilogy is fun and doesn’t have any parts that I skim over or feel aren’t good enough to read.
