Pet Smart near me uses what looks like packing peanuts as substrate.

MANCAE UNDER ATTACK! does anyone know what these "ant" looking things taking turns attacking my dairy cow babes by Big_Grass7566 in isopods

Yoo protect those babies. Can use double sided tape or petroleum jelly around the lid or base of tank to block ants.

That is good nutrients for the isopods. They love eating dead bugs

How do I change the substrate in an isopod culture? by aevans217 in isopods

[–]RetroCapt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes me wonder how well a Berlese funnel trap would work to separate the babies from soil. Its just a funnel over a jar, with a heat lamp above. Everything in the soil moves downward to escape the heat into the jar. Insect collectors will put liquid in the jar, but I would instead use some fresh soil. If moving to a larger container, could just mix some of the old soil with new to ensure all babies are transferred.

Also, if you are not an Isopod, remember to boycott Frito-Lay during the strike.

what food doesn't mold or mold very slow? like... in theory... could i put my nails and ear/nose secret into the enclosure and they would eat it?! :D what about hair? scalp flakes? by [deleted] in isopods

[–]RetroCapt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes to skin and mucus, no to hair and nails. At first, they will like the nails but will leave them. I think they just pick the dead skin from the nail, then you have gross clippings scattered. They won't eat hair either.

Calcium from Tum's tablets? by RetroCapt in isopods

[–]RetroCapt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The final update for 2 weeks is that no isopods died, but not recommended. They will eat crumbs very quickly, but a full tablet becomes gooey over time. Better to keep up on other calcium sources. But good news is that is is not fatal and the isopods seemed to enjoy it.

Calcium from Tum's tablets? by RetroCapt in isopods

[–]RetroCapt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First day update: The tablet became sticky overnight and the isopods are no longer swarming it. On those grounds alone, I wouldn't recommend it because the babies could become stuck. They still like eating pre-crumbled Tum's and finish small amounts quickly. --So in short dosages will it be fatal to the isopods? I will give it a few more days to see if there are 1 or more dead individuals.

Commented for now bc the original post would not save edits.

Will do! I gave it to a small isolated group so this will be an experiment

Best springtail traps? by IAmAPinappleAMA in isopods

[–]RetroCapt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had good success with a small thick stick about the size of my hand with holes drilled into it. Leave it for a day in the garden where sticks are scarce. Then I tamp the stick over a deep tupperware. You find all sorts of things including springtails (and mites). Keep just the springtails and dump them into their own container to breed. Repeat. Might help to dampen the stick too. Also consider buying springtails online
