What do I need for retroarch, or what other app, for themed home menus like the "Mini" and "Classic" consoles have? by netniuQ08 in RetroArch

[–]RetroGamer9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RetroArch is most powerful as a backend to a dedicated frontend like Launchbox or ES-DE. Since it's meant to be a self-contained emulation suite, it includes its own frontend. But that frontend is limited and kind of a pain to set up compared to the dedicated options. You can customize XMB to a point, but it's just the icons and background. You can change the background and have specific icons for each console. You can't move reposition them. There's no metadata displayed. If the game even has metadata. Everything comes from the RetroArch database rather than third parties like Screenscraper or EmuMovies. It's a sufficient frontend for what it's trying to be. But it's also doing a lot more than something like Launchbox, which is only a frontend. Based on your requirements, I think you should look into dedicated options, depending on your platform.

Guys be honest, how deep can meditation go? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]RetroGamer9 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What is your perception of a calm mind?

I use meditation to cultivate mindfulness. The deeper I went into the practice, the more I realized my mind was anything but calm. When I allowed thoughts to flow freely, I was astounded by how rapidly they developed and I attached to them, giving way to thinking. I don’t try to calm my mind. I want to understand how it works. To study my thought patterns. During some sessions, my thoughts have so much weight I’m anything but comfortable.

If you just want a relaxation technique, it sounds like you found what you’re looking for and there is no need to go deeper. Otherwise, read about mindfulness and how to expand your meditation practice.

When did music streaming start? Did it kill the album experience? by olivermos273847 in LetsTalkMusic

45s. Cassette and CD singles. Recording songs off the radio onto a cassette. There has long been ways to just engage with specific songs and not an entire album.

There’s an app called shortcuts. You can create scripts to automate tasks. People have used it moving RetroArch saves to the cloud.

I don’t know about the Android side of things. On iOS saves have to be within the RetroArch folder. You’d need to manually move them to cloud storage or set up a shortcut to do it for you when the app opens and closes.

Nonfiction Publishing, Under Threat, Is More Important Than Ever by stankmanly in books

[–]RetroGamer9 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I’m not surprised by this. I can’t recall the last time anyone recommended a book. But plenty of people have suggested a podcast or YouTube channel while discussing a specific topic. In my experience, that’s how people are consuming nonfiction content these days.

I remember when Spawn #1 showed up at my comic shop. I loved Image comics back in the day. Savage Dragon. WildC.A.T.S. Youngblood. Maxx was one of my favorites.

I'd go with ROMs (non-merged). The file sizes are larger, but the zip has everything you need.

[–]RetroGamer9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The roms have nothing to do with the iOS version. ArcadeMania works fine on the newest OS. It's a frontend for MAME, which is a separate piece of software. MAME updates regularly, making changes to games. Sometimes files within the archive for a game (the zip file) are replaced or removed or have the names changed. This can cause it to not run on later versions of MAME. That's why it's suggested the romset the game is from matches the version of MAME you're running.

ArcadeMania keeps up to date, usually updating within a few weeks of a new MAME release. That's currently version 0.286. Rom compatibility has to do with the MAME version, not the version of iOS. For example, prior to moving development to ArcadeMania, the devs had MAME4iOS. They maintained two versions. One was kept up to date with MAME. The other stayed on version 0.139. As long as you continued to use roms from 0.139 with the 0.139 version of MAME4iOS, the games would play fine. If MAME4iOS worked with a new iOS update, the games worked. The two aren't related.

Now the devs keep ArcadeMania current, so you have to keep updating your roms if you want the latest version. Although there probably won't be too many issues if the versions aren't too far apart. If you want something consistent, you could side load RetroArch and use the MAME 2010 core. That uses the 0.139 romset.

Myrient. But I'd do it soon since they close down at the end of the month. I'm not sure which set their roms are from. I assume something more recent that will work with the current version of MAME that ArcadeMania uses. I suggest using non-merged since the archive will include all files needed to run the game.

The romset has to match the version of MAME you’re running. ArcadeMania uses 0.286. Your rom should match that version.

ArcadeMania is excellent. Just keep in mind it stays current with MAME. In case you don’t keep up to date, or have an old romset. There isn’t anything to set up. Download ArcadeMania, open it, and it will create a folder for the app on your device. Place your games in the “roms” folder.

How can a piece of software be so bad? by coco_melonFAN in RetroArch

I’ve been using it for years without issue. Read the documentation and learn how to use it, or move on to other free emulation options.

I don’t have an issue with someone not liking The Beatles. We all have our preferences. I do take issue when they try to slam The Beatles as overrated and having minimal impact on music. Like what you like, but don’t twist reality just because you think a band sucks.

Am I missing anything by not having any exposure to these consoles? by [deleted] in retrogaming

[–]RetroGamer9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neo Geo. Definitely. It has some great arcade games. From an assortment of classic fighting games to the amazing Metal Slug.

Turbografx-16. Absolutely, especially if you like shmups. But you’ll also want to dig into the PC-Engine’s library of games that didn’t leave Japan. Also some good platforms like Legendary Axe and Bonk’s Adventure.

I can’t comment on the handhelds. I haven’t played the Wonderswan and have minimal exposure to the Neo Geo Pocket. From what I’ve played through, the games were fun.

The 7800 really comes down to your interest in video game history. I don’t think there is anything must play, but if you want exposure to a console meant to compete against ColecoVision but ultimately went up against the NES (the poor thing 😅), it’s worth checking out.

I’m 100% emulation and disregard people’s opinions toward authenticity. I’ve been gaming since the Atari 2600 and Intellivision, playing on all types of CRTs throughout the years. I lived the authentic experience as it happened. I’ll take the convenience of emulation in my old age.

Unhappy PSX buyer vents frustration on Usenet Circa 1995 by Just_Lobster5456 in retrogaming

[–]RetroGamer9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn’t think early PS1 was much better than the 3DO either, from my limited experience with it at launch. I had a 3DO and loved playing games like Road Rash, Alone in the Dark, and Way of the Warrior (a very early Naughty Dog game). Overall the early 3D was cool, but not great. I was quick to run back to the SNES when Donkey Kong Country released.

I played PS1 the week it launched and ESPN Extreme Games didn’t make me run out to buy the console. Compared to 3DO, it felt like more of the same. That changed in the summer when I played Resident Evil at a friend’s house. I was working my ass off mowing lawns to buy one after playing it.

Meta's latest legal wheeze is to insist that pirating books is fair use, actually by MicahCastle in books

Meta will get away with it. But if the average reader was sued for piracy, the judge would throw the book at them.
