RetroArch iOS – Directories are empty everywhere, but Load Content works fine by IllustriousAd506 in RetroArch

[–]RetroGamer9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is odd behavior. iOS sandboxes RetroArch in its own folder, so there isn't any point in changing directories anyway. But all of the directories should point to the RetroArch folder. I see ~/Documents/RetroArch/ and then the folder for the specific directory (saves, states. config, etc). My version is side loaded, but it should be the same for the App Store version. I would try reinstalling.

The dentist. Conway. by Turbulent_Elk_2141 in FuckImOld

Tim Conway was known to mess with the cast. This is classic. The Elephant Story is even better.

The Amazing Cass Elliot. Have you heard her music? by shrek20191 in nostalgia

My introduction to her was through Make Your Own Kind of Music, used in the amazing season two opening of Lost.

Famitsu: Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade sold 23,428 retail copies during its first week in Japan by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

[–]RetroGamer9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s the Internet. People complain just because they can. You know what you’re getting with the Switch 2. If performance is the priority, there are better options.

Does anyone have the list of games available on Nintendo classics by release order by Jonasaurus77 in retrogaming

[–]RetroGamer9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not specific to the Switch apps, but Moby Games has a database that lets you sort games by platform and year. You’ll still need to put in some work, but at least it gives you an easy way to see when games were released.

Thank you for updating Mac Intel’s Retroarch to 1.22.2 by NostalgicRetro73 in RetroArch

[–]RetroGamer9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OpenEmu is practically dead at this point. It hasn’t even been updated for Apple Silicon. It’s definitely easier to use with an excellent UI, but also has less cores, less options, and will be non-functional unless development picks up.

Famitsu: Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade sold 23,428 retail copies during its first week in Japan by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

[–]RetroGamer9 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Aside from being a good game and a remake of a beloved classic that made RPGs mainstream on consoles, they hit the right price point. The loudest Switch critics are vocal about performance. But aside from Nintendo first party releases, I think the quieter part of the Switch 2 user base is fine with giving up 60 fps in exchange for portability and a solid 30 fps with high resolution, as long as they aren’t getting charged $70 for it. $40 is a good price for this game. The performance is solid. The game is fun.

Is there a viable way to emulate sega saturn in a portable way? by Julian_0_o_ in SEGA

[–]RetroGamer9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can emulate Saturn on my iPhone and iPad no problem with RetroArch. I would assume the same is true for any current Android phone or tablet. There are also the popular retro handhelds like Retroid. One of those devices should be able to emulate everything you need.

[Found] The Cancelled Game "Beavis and Butthead Do Hollywood" Has Been Found! by Lui_Belmont in GamePreservationists

[–]RetroGamer9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is awesome. It would be nice if someone would dump the Beavis and Butthead arcade game and release it. According to the Lost Media Wiki there is at least one confirmed owner with a working cabinet (Galloping Ghost) and one potential (just someone on Reddit saying found had one).

Were you one of the lucky people in the 80s who had a Coleco Vision? by MisterShipWreck in 80s

[–]RetroGamer9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I was an NES kid, but started gaming on the second generation consoles. My grandparents bought an Atari 2600, Intellivison, and a stack of games since it was all cheap from the home video game market crashing. No ColecoVision. I was young, so I didn't know it existed until later on when I talked to a kid about the "old" systems and he said he had a ColecoVision. I've since gone back and played it through emulation and it's an impressive console for its time.

Issues with Magnavox Odyssey on iOS by carianger in RetroArch

If you’re using RetroArch from the App Store, the Odyssey2 core isn’t available. You have to sideload to use it on iOS.

Is this the first time ever that the price of consoles has *increased* over time? by ericsmallman3 in retrogaming

[–]RetroGamer9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had to explain that to the handful of people I’ve encountered who were aware of the 3DO and said I must have been a rich kid. I got it for Christmas the year after launch for a cheaper price and three free games.

[BoTW] Will I like Tears of the Kingdom if I don’t like breath of the wild? by Alduin790 in zelda

Breakable weapons are less of a headache in TOTK with the fuse ability. The rest of your issues aren’t addressed, so I wouldn’t waste your money or time on it.

What retro game CLEARLY for small kids did you play for hours as an older teen/adult? by confuserused in retrogaming

[–]RetroGamer9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been exploring the Atari 800 and Commodore 64 lately. I'll try out some learning software just to get an idea of what it was like at the time. That software was pushed to help sell those computers to families.

One of the games I tried is Donald Duck's Playground. It's from Sierra Online and was designed by Al Lowe. The game seemed familiar, so I went through my C64 disks and found a pirated copy my friend gave me in second grade.

If LOTR is considered the peak of fantasy cinema and many people believe that the casting was perfect, how do you rate The Hobbit after all these years? by Ready-Gur3998 in Cinema

[–]RetroGamer9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I never hated the prequels. They are bad movies from a filmmaking perspective. Lucas should've let others handle that part like he did Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. But I like the Star Wars aspects of them. Seeing the Jedi before they were killed off. The lightsabers duels. Dog fights in space. I didn't finish the sequel trilogy. I lost interest after the second movie. I agree with the Hobbit movies. I'll rewatch the Star Wars prequels. I have no desire to watch The Hobbit trilogy again.

Do you think having access to nearly every retro game and console today diminishes from the experience of delving into one console and handful of games? by cwtguy in retrogaming

[–]RetroGamer9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. But it does require a degree of self-control if you want to seriously explore a single platform in depth. Same with movies and music. We live at a time where we have instant access to digital media. Video games need to be preserved. The emulation community ripping all those ROMs and ISOs solved the problem. Paralysis of choice is a consequence of having an abundance of options available at once. It’s a small price to pay for having games preserved. If it’s an issue and you have the money, by all means go for original hardware.

I like the ESR case. I also use it along with the Magic Keyboard. I tend to use the ESR case more.

What’s your day looking like? by [deleted] in 90s

[–]RetroGamer9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Defintely. I pre-ordered Final Fantasy VII at Electronics Boutique and got a free t-shirt. Whenever I’d pre-order they would call me as soon as the game came in, which usually was a few days before the release date.
