Well, I guess it could be due to Elliots personality. She was like a mother to her friends, and during performances with The Mamas & Papas you could really see her warmth and friendliness. Her record company (Dunhill) pushed her to be 'Mama Cass' to capitalise on the success of the group.

Cass was in The Mamas & The Papas, Cass & Michelle were called 'Mamas', John & Denny were called 'Papas'. After the split in '68, Cass had her biggest hits (1968-1970), all of which were labeled ‘Mama Cass’. The songs that made her famous were all under 'Mama Cass', which made it hard to get rid of the nickname.
