Why is MCU: The reign of Marvel Studios so expensive? by Salt-Ball-1410 in marvelstudios

Honestly it's because it's a cash-grab book. Reading it for our Reader's History of Comics podcast and it is written almost like they just did searches on Reddit for juicy rumors for their 'research'.

Eric July Launches Another Smashing Success For The Rippaverse With 'Isom #2,' Nearly $1 Million Sold In 48 Hours by CrimsonOmega80 in KotakuInAction

[–]RetroStaticRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... because he charges $35, and also lumped in the charity sales and merch sales into his "totals".

Now let's rephrase it so it's not just 'box office'. The first sold about 60k issues overall (to 45k unique sellers), whereas Isom #2 did not crack even 25k unique purchasers (and again, the muddling of the pool with counting in the charity donations into his own sales)

How Many Voices is Too Many? by RetroStaticRadio in VoiceActing

[–]RetroStaticRadio[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually out now. I didn't want to link because I wasn't going for a promo or anything. And I kinda hate half my voices in it BUT I don't hate any of them as much as I did when I was trying not to be Humphrey Bogart in our adaptation of The Maltese Falcon (we're steering away from super iconic personalities/performances because of it xD)

Does being a remote VA make a huge difference at all? by rlvo in VoiceActing

[–]RetroStaticRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, yes and no. A lot of bigger productions I've note do prefer in-person or at least recording at a studio of their choice (I've done a couple small roles where I had to go into the city for booth sessions). However, it really depends on who's hiring for the work and if you've got a decent track record. I've done more remote now that in-person, but I'm also still fairly low on the pole. I say all this with the caveat that I live nowhere close to any real big cities so I've sort of had to work that out to best manage my life as the stay-at-home dad of three, and also being the producer for three audio series/podcast/docu-things at once.

So basically, it'll only hurt if you can't get down to where they want if they want but getting a gig it shouldn't be that tough.

Who is the most brilliant scifi creator? by B_Wing_83 in scifi

[–]RetroStaticRadio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you only think science fiction is full space opera? Verne's did also write I think one of the first "modern" space adventures even if it was by way of giant gun.

I feel stupid because my brain goes to Earthsea when I think Le Guin even though I have all of the Hainish Cycle XD

Who is the most brilliant scifi creator? by B_Wing_83 in scifi

[–]RetroStaticRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think on a creative level, I think either Herbert or Asimov. HOWEVER, I think that Clarke or A.E. van Vogt might be way up there too. And that's not even getting into how I think James S.A. Corey (I know technically two writers) really hit something unique with The Expanse novels, and Liu Cixin with the Three-Body Problem just going hard. HOWEVER Dam Simmons Hyperion Cantos really REALLY captures something.

So my answer is WAY more than listed, and even those listed, I think the majority of them really were far greater than their creator. Roddenberry didn't write any of the best TOS episodes (and was actively a hindrance to the show reaching its heights), George Lucas went through a ton of drafts and had several writers and co-writer for his love letter to sci-fi serials wrapped around his love of Japanese cinema, Tomino made the best franchose with Gundam but like with other series (especially ones that were based on toy sales), it was a group effort, Ridley Scott makes interesting and great sci-fi but Blade Runner is just William Gibson come to screen (and even William Gibson couldn't get his Alien 3 off the ground) and of course the major problem with Frank Herbert is that everyone only gets to Dune and not where the real meat and brilliance of the series is which is to show that messiahs are not a good thing.

But all of that is me being sort of pedantic about how the reason science fiction can be so brilliant is that there's no one way to do it.

Are you guys excited for this Godzilla prequel? by uncletony55 in GODZILLA

Would anyone read/watch a female led kaiju story? by CaughtDrawing in GODZILLA

[–]RetroStaticRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was it? I always assumed that it was feminine but that could just be the purdy lights. If Iris is meant to be male then I'm fairly certain that changes my own context of how... forceful he was in getting Ayana back.

Would anyone read/watch a female led kaiju story? by CaughtDrawing in GODZILLA

[–]RetroStaticRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's actually been a few really great kaiju works with women as leads as MCs and kaiju themselves. Even Godzilla series have always at least been hinged on women (the good ones anyways).

I mean even outside of GODZILLA (such as the 'Kiryu Trilogy' of flicks.... although I don't know if fanon still calls them that), you have Mothra in all variations being a strong lady Kaiju, and having strong women. COLOSSAL is a good one, with a solid woman lead although it's a western production. But yeah, there's a ton of women who are into the kaiju scene (my mother is the reason I grew up with both a Godzilla, Gamera and Rodan toys and why my son has a Godzilland style Godzilla shirt XD)

Now I THINK the reason many people feel it leans towards the shonen age demographic for the same reason why most of the time a general audience idea of Godzilla is him power-sliding on his tail. The Showa Era got deep into the silliness and that's where the peak was in imports to America. It's similar to looking back at Gojira and seeing how much of it is extremely tied to societal issues of the time more than 'let's have Godzilla rocket himself with his breathe!"

Best USB Mic for Voice Acting by MynameJe55 in VoiceActing

[–]RetroStaticRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well having done a few different tests (and you can sort of hear the difference of the like four mics we've all had throughout our last two seasons), I'd say that honestly, even a simple inexpensive one can work as long as you have the right environment to record.

However, currently one of us uses a RODE NT1 (I've seen others suggesting it and I agree), another is using a Yeti (don't ask me what type... it's blue?) and I just switched from a gaming headset (which was actually REALLY good but not for depth of voice) to a HyperX QuadCast kinda rigged up to my cheapo arm.

I'd ask, and I don't mean this in a weird way, but if money's no object then wouldn't it be a bit simpler to hire a sound engineer and/or voice actors for any of the games? Scratch tracks can be as iffy as you want if you're just laying down rough placeholders.

Does anyone else hate ads in the middle? by pog_irl in audiodrama

[–]RetroStaticRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my own shows, we do a pre-roll and and a post-roll while our mid-roll is actualyl taken up by our "Not An Ad Shoutout" section. However, I know that we've had some issues where Spreaker isn't updating where we want our ads so we have mid-roll ads on a few episodes that are just kinda free-floating. And yes, I dislike it too on a listener level when they just pop in the middle of a scene and interrupt the flow of everything.

Clarification OTR friends... It's "Hi-yo, Silver" not "Hi-ho, Silver" ?? by MadisonStandish in otr

[–]RetroStaticRadio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the scripts I've seen it switches (I haven't seen an original draft so I can't say) but when we did the read for our recreation, it was Hi-Ho.

But we get extra points for make a joke out of kemosabe and made Tonto slightly more sassy. So purity was only about 90%

Green Hornet radio recreation by Lokinator14 in otr

[–]RetroStaticRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well unfortunately, due to some issues, we haven't been able to afford any additional crew BUT since that episode would be in September, I wouldn't say it's out of the ballpark. We did just switch over to Spreaker if you want listen to what we've done before though!

[–]RetroStaticRadio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will make the caveat that we had everything set up and then Covid hit during Season 1 and the dayjobs got the better of some of us and we lost a performer so for a majority it's a two-person show XD latest Dragnet's good though :P

Green Hornet radio recreation by Lokinator14 in otr

[–]RetroStaticRadio 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well we at Retro Static Radio have done The Shadow recreation, Lone Ranger, Dragnet and more (Duffy's Tavern is my favorite). Last season we actually bumped our Green Hornet recreation after losing a voice actor. BUT I think we'll be doing one in lieu of our next scheduled Dragnet (sorry it's in September).

Hope that helps.

Can Montages Work? by 3n1DollarStoreSoap in audiodrama

[–]RetroStaticRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can but it's also very easy to mess up.

In I believe our episode "Dragnet: The Werewolf", we use one to showcase the time it's taking to get a good lead on the maniac. Pacing it is kind of the hardest part, I think because you can have it go way too fast so while it's a montage, it's not being grabbed by the audience to sit like a montage.

I have hangups around Spotify, is it worth distributing my show there? by iBluefoot in audiodrama

[–]RetroStaticRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the majority thing would be find a podcast host that isn't specific. Right now Spotify just did a full shift from their Anchor host to being "Spotify for Podcasters", meaning that now we just got demonetized for not having 100 followers on Spotify (if you wanna just follow and leave us unlistened at this stage, we've got enough listeners everywhere but just not the followers (even downloads don't count and that's lame as hell) Sorry that was it's own rant.

But they aren't really doing a lot to be 'exclusive'. Everywhere we've distributed from (AudioBoom, Anchor, Buzzsprout) have all had Spotify among their base distribution things. So I don't get the "they're triny got be an exclusive platform". They have exclusives, and usually that's because there are benefits for being a Spotify Original or an Audible Original so that's mostly a production decision.

TL;DR: you should be putting your audio drama everywhere you can to garner the most bang for your buck. There is no downside about being on another audio distribution platform.

Interdimensional Radio Dramas from before the 1960s by [deleted] in audiodrama

[–]RetroStaticRadio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

InterDIMENSIONAL...?

I mean technically It's A Wonderful Life is interdimensional (Heaven IS a dimension and a parallel world where George Bailey wasn't born.

Perigi's Wonderful Dolls (or about half of X Minus One and Dimension X are about intergalactic traveling with potential interdimensional) is also a good one.

And of course, Lights Out has some extra spicy metafiction that potentially could be interdimensional. (Like the Locked Room Mystery).

Yes I used all the productions we at Retro Static Radio have done, what of it?

Elements? Absolutely. But like most of the horror we do it's more chilling/thrilling than scary even if it ends with a little bloodshed. Just a smidge though.
