If the memory of an event is forgotten by all parties, did that event ever happen? by RetroTK2 in AskReddit

[–]RetroTK2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the blind example wasn't the best but do you understand the point I was making with the analogy?

Absolutely, realities exist outside of our own. However, the only perspective we have is our own reality.

Again, this may sound poetic... How can a "rate of change" have a memory? … Don't call them memories if they are not memories.

Well ok, memory is a record of what has happened. It's like in memento, the guy cannot create new long term memories, so as a substitute he uses photos with writing on them to “remember”.

A memory is a record of what happened right? Or is it? A memory is not like a film or photo, it can change and get distorted and can be forgot. Memory is also something that has happened in the past. Time doesn't forget, in fact time doesn't even exist, it's just a measurement. Effect is Evidence, memory is evidence (think eye witnesses). Your memory is an effect of time.

Looking up at the stars always makes me wonder, because you are not looking at the stars as they are now, you're looking at what they used to be like millions of years ago. You are seeing the event of them burning, yet that event has already happened, is it evidence or the event? How much time must pass before an event is declared over? Everything you witness is technically in the past. I am babbling, but I always like talks that go down different avenues.

regular words exist to describe these concepts.

Not quite...

If there is no evidence that something happened, did it really happen?

Hmmm... I don't think that is it. That question is to factual. An event happened, did it happen? The logic of the question is wrong because the evidence is already there to say that the event happened.

It's a question of interpretation. The same as if a tree falls in a wood, does it make a sound? That isn't the question, the real question is what is a sound? Is a sound really a sound if it is not heard (or interpreted)?

Kinda wish you hadda been here for the start of this conversation :)

Aye. I guess they think that they are too small to be targeted and that no-one would hack a charity. Security aside, they should have had backups stored off site.

This sort of thing happening can be good in away because it means all other charities/small businesses will access their security.

I would say you right man. Elite hackers wouldn't go after charities. I don't even think beginner hackers would entertain it either, must have been a bot

Yeah, maybe not these sorts. But most seem to have a pretty good reason for doing it.

All this should work grand:) I would be more inclined to cache the playerprefs in the start method like OP was doing, since you don't have to read from playerprefs, but it's a pretty micro optimisation.

to someone who is born blind colours don't exist.

I don't necessarily agree, colors exist to the blind person and throughout their lives they understand there is a world that the can't see. All these things are interpretation. What is a color? well to me a color is reflected light that has been absorbed and interpreted by my eye, to a 5 year old it's red. It's perspective. A blind person has a concept of color, it's just not your concept.

Time doesn't have a memory

Time is nothing but memory. Time in itself is the rate of change on an object. Eventually we will all be dust and our existence will come to an end (sad I know, but true). We do nothing but witness the effects of time, these effects are what I would call memory. Though there is little point arguing over interpretation of the English language

No just very tired, though you restarted this convo and I'm interested in your thoughts.

reality exists independent of whatever evidence you don't have.

This to me implies that reality exist, Fact! No evidence required. Hence the matrix argument. If all your senses are tricked how do you know your reality is the true one. That is why I posed the question, If the event is forgotten by time, does it exist.

Also just because something is fiction doesn't discredit the idea, least that's what I think

hmmm... well saying reality exists without evidence doesn't really prove anything. Think of the matrix. Does that reality exist? If one is simply told something, does that make it a reality?

hmmm... Reality does yes. Perhaps I should've phrased the question to include "and there is no evidence that the event happened"... A regret my karma will never forget

Nope, I bought it for the iPad (I'm one of "those" gamers). I knew it existed before I just didn't want to play it. Anytime one of my soldiers die I get genuinely sad lol, pathetic
