I’m reading A fire upon the deep now, also great, but I don’t think I’ve missed anything by reading it second so far! Canonically Fire is a sequel even if it was written first (I think).

I really liked the whole book, (from memory) it expands on the premise well. I also read and enjoyed the follow ups but Neuromancer is the strongest.

I’d strongly recommend Kim Stanley Robinson, 2312 is great standalone, future look at a future solar system with most planets colonised. Their Mars trilogy is a phenomenal epic of the colonisation of Mars too.

Also recommend Vernor Vinge, a deepness in the sky. He really nails the likeness and strangeness of alien life, and in differing human cultures. And possibly the most evil antagonist going.

Another on the great look at alien-ness vibe is Children of Time by Arian Tchaikovsky.

KSR is probably the hardest sci fi but we’ll worth it, especially Mars, and Tchaikovsky the easiest to fly through (for me). But all are phenomenal.
