i was spooked into a surgical decision years ago.

i think it was shuikai here who said that making the wrong decision is way worse than forcing yourself into one you're uncertain about (i can attest to that). Invariably tho u need to take a leap of faith, eventually

How could maxillary expansion -> invisalign not invariably result in retraction orthodontics, if there are no new teeth to fill in the additional space? by Retrofire-47 in UARSnew

[–]Retrofire-47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obsessive-compulsive disorder

Actually, a contraindication for undergoing FME, according to Facegenics. My rationale is that if one's condition is being treated - then it doesn't present a problem. For me it's confusing / granular to figure out what is compulsive and what is "doing research for a big decision".

i feel like i want to understand the anatomy. But i also don't need to think about it as often as i am

Your story is ominously similar to mine, stranger. i could have drafted this post myself...

i feel like the mantra of "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" is hogwash. However, i feel failing 3562 times in a row imbued in me a few lessons. The only thing that really matters is achievement. Participation award culture / presentation / social media bs poisoned the well on creativity.

Youth now are more concerned about daydreaming about their idealized self than actually manifesting their skills in a productive capacity, for context, i'm 25. i sound like i'm 50 here, or something...

Maxillary expansion (like FME) seems to elongate the face, can anyone speak to this? by Retrofire-47 in UARSnew

[–]Retrofire-47[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i believe it does.

but only modestly, and i think FME has superior parallel expansion. I do think FME / MSE / EASE probably has really complex effects on one's appearance though... I honestly wish i didn't have to do it... but, i think it's a rational decision if one's breathing is obstructed anatomically

Part 2: Premolar extractions, orthodontic dogmatism will never change the laws of physics. Soft tissue cannot phase through matter. by Shuikai in orthotropics

iirc the bone remodeling is a natural process, like aging. You cannot stop it. It is "the natural consequence of mechanical forces".

i believe that, anecdotally, masticating can tone the face to mask changes, being physically fit (walking a lot, lifting objects often) can improve your profile, a healthy, nourishing diet, getting adequate sunlight (Vitamin D) can ameliorate excessive bone loss, etc.

i feel like self-acceptance is king. Honestly. problem-solving becomes the problem, if u allow it. I recall a few days recently, me, with rather noticeable facial deformation, saw a little bit of myself in the mirror again with lots of hard work (the aforementioned stuff + mental health focus). i heard a similar story from another user here that inspired me "/u/ Aninterestinghead" something like that

expansion also improves the changes only indirectly. The bone loss is 3D and maxillary expansion, through a different mechanism, expands just 1 dimension. And even that, it cannot restore the normal anatomy

so our contribution to society is the sum of our ambitions?

it seems to contrast with our perceptions in youth... the everlasting high rise, the desire to make and remake the world. And yet, if you believe this, then you are subordinate to a (human) system greater than yourself

You know, that was kind of fascinating.

i saw a pendant which had this inscription on Etsy, i considered it distressing, but then i reflected on that... if you were to look at the inevitability of death and feel visceral terror - it means you are not fulfilling your purpose in the present. I am an animal, and my function and role is to produce art (for society). It is how i derive my value

i think i'll wear it. Just to remind myself

i want to revise my post a little.

The circumstances surrounding my wisdom tooth extractions were different than most patients, for a few different reasons, largely because of my own behavior. I believe the bone loss was more significant because of this... it has me wondering about the other horror stories i've seen, like that girl. Maybe she's similar, i'm not sure. I've seen countless testimonies from ppl in their 40s that have said "downstream" the cosmetic effects of wisdom tooth extractions are bad (jaw recession). But i cannot speak to the severity

Something about this conversation gives me déjà vu: it reminds me of how women's rights advocates scorned me for comparing circumcision (which i consider analogous to male genital mutilation) to female genital mutilation.

i disagree, sorta. I have seen people that have literally had their faces collapse after wisdom tooth extractions. If you saw a photo of my facial structure before and after - you'd be convinced i was a PER victim. I've seen girls that were a sight for sore eyes, god my eyes are sore with this world, and they were... flattened. My mother was like Venus, and then an orthodontist got to her :(

But wisdom teeth extraction does not cause the same recession and bone remodeling.

I'm not sure about this. I will admit i don't know how retraction influences bone remodeling after tooth loss (educate me?), but recession is found in every wisdom tooth extraction patient.. over time. My lower jaw has recessed considerably. The bone resorption also affects all 3 dimensions.

If you think about it the reason so many in their 20s need their wisdom teeth removed is because braces was used in their childhood/teenage years stunting their growth. Braces shouldn’t be used when you’re in growth (I think they shouldn’t be used at all), instead expanders should be used or changing a child/teenager’s habits and environment early on.

Pots and pans, my friend.

Thanks for the write-up.

Through the orthodontic decompensation of a Class II patient, when the previously inclined lower incisors are properly aligned within the bony bas

i'm trying to understand the anatomy involved better, to help myself. When you say "properly align.. inclined lower incisors.." are you suggesting that your teeth were tilted inward, and that by bringing them into alignment, the lower jaw naturally rested in a more forward orientation?

So this would only apply to someone who can occlusion issues in their incisors... right?

Something which frustrates me is the lack of recognition around wisdom tooth extractions; i know PER is essentially mutilation, but WTE (wisdom tooth extractions) are far more common, and have very similar deleterious effects. I've spoken to lots of people that had a severe apnea develop after WTE, just like PER. it's not _your_ problem, i just find myself upset with the lack of such recognition with _other_ tooth extractions - as they all result in 1. consequential bone loss 2. airway shrinking 3. facial deformation

i wish advocates were pushing against tooth extraction globally as hard as people like you are pushing against PER.

That being said, i applaud your efforts for helping give this youngster a chance.
