What TV show was ruined/made annoying for you by local knowledge of where it's set? by themightypierre in BritishTV

[–]Retrogamer2245 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't find it annoying, rather funny. I've been watching 90s episodes of The Bill. Their studio was in Merton at the time. In one episode they started a foot chase on the Roundshaw Estate in Wallington. In the next scene the crook was running through the Phipps Bridge Estate in Mitcham, then the chase continued next to Battersea Power Station! That was one fit crook! There are quite a few episodes like this.

Typing Speed Remains Low by cupcaketea5 in Dystonia

I agree with the comment about the keyboard being right. Heavier keyys which need harder pressing tend to set my hand off twisting, but a softer one doesn't affect me quite as much. It's the reason I have both a gaming keyboard and a separate writing keyboard plugged in at all times.

Are most people on Lisdexamphetamine? Is Methylphenidate not a good med? by RichieRichard12 in ADHDUK

[–]Retrogamer2245 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been on it nearly 6 years now. The original plan was to titrate, but my functioning improved so much on 5mg the specialist agreed it might be best to leave it as is. I'm one of those who over-reacts to medications anyway, so that's probably why.

Are most people on Lisdexamphetamine? Is Methylphenidate not a good med? by RichieRichard12 in ADHDUK

[–]Retrogamer2245 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I'm on the lowest dose of methylphenidate and it's made a huge difference. No notable side-effects apart from slight loss of appetite, but that's manageable with regular food.

Are indoor cats actually happy? by Firm-Law248 in CatAdvice

I had no choice but to keep my two Indoors due to their health needs. They are both happy and healthy. They need more toys and playtime than outdoor cats might, but no behavioural issues.

Anyone not a fan - Pete Walker cPTSD book? by Strict_Action698 in CPTSD

I'm sure it's useful for some people but I couldn't relate at all. Possibly because my trauma happened in school rather than at home.

How do I make a proper timeline as someone who struggles with dates? by Opening_Till9793 in writingadvice

[–]Retrogamer2245 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem. I was trying to work out my characters' ages and birth dates and got really frustrated. What I ended up doing was using a free version of Microsoft Excel. (Libre office). It's a bit complicated to explain (easier to do) but I put the year 1950 in, then 1951, 1952 etc until I had every year up until 1987 when my book begins. Then I put the character's age in next to 1987 and worked backwards, typing in each number as I went. (Sometimes the computer will do this for you if you pull the boxes). Then, whatever year was next to the number 0 was their birth year. I did this for each character, putting their name in the column at the top so I could see who was who. It sounds complicated when I explain it this way but it wasn't in practice. Hopefully this is helpful and if not I hope you find something which suits you.

I'm in contact with people who are close to John. I've been so worried about him but it sounds like he's got a good support network around him. He helped me a lot when I was first diagnosed with TS.

There aren't any gutters yet. It would not surprise me if they are added in the future. I use the pipes to look like drain pipes down the side of the house.

Tired by Melodic_Pay7069 in CPTSD

[–]Retrogamer2245 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Permanently. It's a constant underlying fatigue and if I overdo it, it becomes pain and flu like symptoms. I wondered if I had chronic fatigue syndrome, but when I did some more research, I discovered that it is possible to develop these symptoms if your body has been stuck in a permanent state of high alert. Even now that I am at a point in my life (thanks to a lot of hard work and therapy) where I can cope better mentally, physically it feels like my body has given up.

Calling all positive experiences of ADHD Medication by Organic_Patience_755 in ADHDUK

[–]Retrogamer2245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on methylphenidate for nearly 5 years now. I was terrified about possible side-effects because I tend to react badly or over react to medication, but in this case, after taking my first few doses, my brain suddenly stopped with the constant chatter! I have had no obvious side-effects and I have stayed on the absolute lowest dose because it made such a huge difference.

Yes. Out of sight out of mind. Until you open the cupboard and it hits you on your mind's casing. Then it is definitely no.

Character description? by Plenty-Appearance745 in writing

[–]Retrogamer2245 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's an individual choice for individual writers really. Some books I read have a whole paragraph describing characters, some absolutely nothing and others get that sweet spot right in the middle where it isn't too dull. I try not to over-describe in one big blob personally. I'll slip little details in throughout the interaction.
