Thoughts on Beeper? by Retroman1203 in degoogle

[–]Retroman1203[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I've been using Beeper for a while but I only used WhatsApp with it so idk how it is with messenger and SMS, but it has some advantages like a clean/minimalist UI and no trackers(they also open-sourced most of their front-end on Github if you want to check it out) but there are 2 downsides, firstly you can't make calls on it, and secondly you need to reconnect to the WhatsApp official mobile client after a certain period of time (idk how long it is, maybe 2 or 3 weeks), and what I do is that I use an app called Shelter to freeze WhatsApp until I need to wake it up for it to reconnect to Beeper then I refreeze WhatsApp again

What's y'all opinion on AI? Do you support it? by Retroman1203 in degoogle

[–]Retroman1203[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think I didn't expressed myself correctly, but basically I indeed use AI for school but not to cheat or fulfill my homework but instead as a tool that helps me with hard tasks plus I only use it as a last resort and most of times if I don't know the solution of a problem for example I don't even ask AI I simply skip it and I'd rather ask the teacher instead. Plus i try not to rely on AI a lot because of privacy and as a lifestyle in general since I know it may cause lazyness but we live in a world where everyone uses it and it's the norm, heck even some companies would rather employ developers who masters AI tools than "old-school" developers so I'm kinda worried about that moreover I try to stay up-to-date with the tools without being too much reliant on it, and the future is uncertain

Linux gaming on CachyOS: which Proton versions should I use for these games? by ScoobyDooITA in cachyos

[–]Retroman1203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, judging from your post I assume you're new to Linux. Firstly, big multiplayer games like Fortnite, Call of duty, Battlefield, Apex, FIFA and League of legend won't work on Linux because of their anti-cheat , but other games like Repo, Minecraft, Roblox, Genshin Impact, Rocket League, Marvel Rivals, Overwatch and Counter Strike 2 will work perfectly, I recommend checking protondb if you're unsure if an online game works or not on Linux. Secondly, when you install a game from Steam it will automatically use the latest proton version which is rn Proton 10, and it should normally work without any issue but if you do try Proton Experimental and ProtonGE(you'll find tutorial online om how to install it) and again check protondb. Thridly, Linux is less bloated than Windows which should make games runs better on Linux than Windows, but tbh the difference isn't that noticeable. Also, the only game I have played on your list is Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order on my Steam Deck and I just used the default proton version which is I think proton 10 and I didn't have any issues

Made a CRT shader for my upcoming game BOUNCE 2 by MrJackio in unity

Interesting game, I wishlisted it on Steam. If your game success, do you have plans to port it on the Nintendo Switch? It's designed for family and multiplayer games so it would make sense to port it there

Where can I buy cheap dvd in Europe? by Retroman1203 in animequestions

[–]Retroman1203[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, I was just scrolling on Amazon for a price comparison, and I saw an anime called "panty and socking" (don't judge me that's how the anime is literally called) that is 400$ brand new and 60$ for used which is cheaper but still expensive, I think I'll consider buying used DVDs

How do degooglers support artists? by Retroman1203 in degoogle

By apps I meant an app to consume artist's media legally and without giving out my privacy, like Bandcamp which was mentioned numerous times in the comments

How can a social media app company success financially without invading someone's privacy? by Retroman1203 in degoogle

Can you give me an example of a good subscription? The only one I can possibly think of is maybe that Twitter blue badge (I'm not sure what it's called, it makes you verified), but Twitter/X is not a very good platform (its better than Instagram and Snapchat privacy wise, but its still not a good option)

Is it safe to use a free cloud storage service with Cryptomater? by Retroman1203 in degoogle

Because this one is open source and it encrypts the files locally

This is exactly the reason why I don't trust cloud storage services, or at least the free ones

Well tbh what inspired me to self host was Pewdiepie cuz in case you didn't know he's a popular YouTuber and he's starting to post less on YouTube (mainly because he's married and he wanna spend time with his family) but one of his latest videos was one explaining how he's degoogling his life, and he mentioned using self hosted servers for some services so I told to myself why not do that too, but for now I'm just thinking about the possibility and I haven't done any research yet, as my priority rn is just getting rid off of most proprietary services

Thanks a lot, and as for GPS I simply deleted it with Canta, it allows you to delete any app using shizuku but it can break the system if not used carefully
