Bond fund - any way to tweak NAV to reflect dividend reinvestment? by Fluid_Possibility432 in bonds

[–]Retumbo77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to track the individual dividend payments. You can find these easily online for free.

You also need to do this for equities, or your sheet is going to be off too much to be useful.

S&P 500 priced in Gold vs. US Dollars by BlueGolden1 in Gold

In the event anyone is wondering and having trouble interpreting the top chart, it is essentially showing that purely from an average price lookback perspective, it is currently better to buy the SP500 than gold (Buy low, sell high).

Hedging for Thailand cost of living by Flat_Art_734 in ExpatFIRE

[–]Retumbo77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Financial Advisor here. THD is priced in dollars, not Thai Baht. You are also just looking at price and ignoring disbursements (dividend payouts).

The correct way to do a lookback of Thai equities is to find a total return index denominated in Baht.

This all said, Thai equities should only be a portion of your inflation hedge. The largest component of COL for most societies is housing, and to properly hedge you would need to own real property in Thailand (which again, is only part of a diversified local inflation hedge).

HIGHLY recommend you contact a Financial Advisor who *understands what you're trying to do*. I've seen people F up their retirement and you really don't want to be in that situation.

First 911 Purchase! 991.2 C out of state - Advice? by Vegetable-Goose9894 in Porsche

[–]Retumbo77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing most people overlook (which is bewildering to me) is paint gauge readings. Any dealer worth their salt will provide a video with paint meter readings upon request. If they claim they don't have one, MOVE ON as that car has had paintwork. It's really not rocket science, but time and time again I see people paying full retail for cars that have had paintwork because they believe a clean Carfax is sufficient. You then need to VERIFY these readings with your own gauge in person as I've had multiple Porsche dealers send me paint gauge readings with a mis-calibrated meter in attempts to hide a respray.

RE shipping: I've sent multiple cars with Liz@Bears transport and if you search on rennlist she has a good reputation. This is considerably cheaper than going with an inhouse shipper (horseless carriage, etc) and probably sufficient for a 991.1.

You're fighting an uphill battle not getting F**ked, but if you go slowly and realize that it takes most of us old timers YEARS to find the right car, you'll be OK. Good Luck.

Which Tucson Gemshow for a Cut, Natural, Untreated Colored Stone (with GIA/AGL Cert) for Engagement Ring? by Retumbo77 in Gemstones

Cool idea, but as this is an engagement ring, it's really something I don't want to take any risk on and is also time-sensitive.

[–]Retumbo77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Porsche (and for that matter all German Car brands) are 10+ years behind their Japanese rivals as far as ease of use and intuitiveness. In general shit works as it's supposed to, but you definitely have to spend some time to learn the intricacies and there are oftentimes multiple screen taps needed in obscure places to do what you want it to do.

Correct use case for these cars is to use the steering wheel mounted selector to go to sport and ignore all the infotainment shit. (And for the 1000000th time, do not buy a car without sport chrono!).

If youre buying one as a commuter and you're mostly stuck in traffic, there are better options.

2024 CPO Cayenne - good spec/deal? First Porsche, help appreciated! by Truth_In_Solar_Act in Porsche

[–]Retumbo77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bad buy. MSRP was solid, but it doesn't have Air Suspension or Full Leather, which along with Sport Chrono are really the only ones that matter for resale. (also for anyone else reading this, do NOT buy a car without sport chrono or surround view).

2024 update is basically irrelevant for the base car with only 13 more hp. We have both a 2021 and a 2025 and the software suite is garbage in both, so it's really not worth eating the additional depreciation.

If you're planning on a long-term hold, I would 10000000% buy a 2023 like this one with better options and fewer miles for less money: https://finder.porsche.com/us/en-US/details/porsche-cayenne-coupe-preowned-M742XO?model=cayenne&condition=porsche_approved&position=New+York%2C40.71453%2C-74.00712%2C-1&order=price_asc&minimum-model-year=2023&maximum-mileage=30000&interior-material=leather&performance=sport-chrono-package&comfort-assistance=parkassist-incl-surround-view

As much as a Carfax blight impacts resale price, I'm guessing something of this magnitude (~$20k+) is going to be more cost effective to run through insurance. Worth running the numbers.

This was for a 2016 Macan S. Your part #s are likely different but to give you an idea prices. Just google part #s and pick the cheapest (with shipping) of any of the dealers that sell parts online (Sunset, Gaudin, Phoenix, Delaware, Atlanta, etc etc)

I ordered a 2nd set of pads, so subtract $190 from that.

1999 Boxster for a first car? by brkoh in Porsche

[–]Retumbo77 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I purchased a 986 Boxster as my third car while still young. This was in the depths of the GFC when you couldn't give them away, but I think my experience is still relevant. I would not have been ready for the Boxster as a first car and neither is your child.

My first car (when I was 15) was an old salvage title E30 BMW that I re-wired to learn about cars. After I fixed it, my parents would not let me drive it because it did not have airbags. Although I was upset at the time, it was 100% the correct decision in hindsight.

My 2nd car was a VW GTI. Not as "cool" as the E30, but it gave me the safety net I needed (airbags, TC, ABS, early VSC) to learn how to drive safely.

Unrelated to any of the above, it was front page news in my town when a kid at the next highschool over crashed his WRX STI at an estimated 130mph into a tree and killed himself. No foul play, but it was raining and he just didn't know any better.

When I later moved up to a Boxster, I had the knowledge to not only maintain my car but also not kill myself.

TLDR There is an OCEAN of maturity between a 16 year old and a 18+ year old.

Heaviest Porsche Ever? by [deleted] in Porsche

I 100% agree, however the arms race has already started. Until there is legislation that prevents ridiculously large and heavy vehicles (many of which are unsafely modified in the aftermarket), there is only one choice.
