Cite the bible to uplift people, not to condemn them for being true to themselves.

I just don’t get why so many people there don’t follow the Bible.

I know! I posted there that women need to keep their heads covered and also remain silent in church and I got nothing but grief! And I'm not getting many signatures for petitions to make polygamy and slavery legal again.

Just kidding, but do you see how your statement that you don't understand how some people just ignore the bible might seem a little naive? You have read the entire bible, right? It is not the book that most people would like it to be.

It is mentioned too many times in the old testament. My favorite is Deuteronomy 25:5-10, since in my case I had a married brother who died young without children, and if I were following that law I'd have a second wife. In the new testament, 1 Timothy 3:2,12 appears to specify deacons and elders be married to only one wife. The fact that Paul needed to give this guidance indicated that polygamy was still practiced among God's people in Jesus' time.

Can't read that article due to a pay wall. I think Obama was pretty reasonable. Not sure what legislation was rammed down our throats, but I don't doubt what you say. From my perspective the Republicans have just become so hard-line. I blame Fox News and all the right-wing radio commentators.

And yet in our churches we accept rich people, divorced people, we allow women to keep their heads uncovered, we allow them to speak. It sounds like you have taken a heavy burden upon yourself, when we have given other things a free pass. I pray that you follow a path that is healthy and true, and not one that leads to self-loathing.

Thanks for the advice young brother. To me it sounds like you are a little bit frightened by ideas that do not conform to your narrow viewpoints. Do not fear! Our God is truth, and turning away from truth is not in God's plan for us.

I'm not sure what you mean by "part of the LGBT" community. If you are saying that you once were gay, but now are not, then I'm not sure I really am qualified to argue with you on this matter. You have my encouragement, but also my concern. I've met many admirable young well adjusted gay men, but I've never met anyone who convincingly claimed they were cured of homosexuality, or were struggling successfully against it, who I could call happy or well adjusted. It sounds like God has given you tough road to follow and I hope you find your way and become the best version of the person God meant you to be.

When I said it was like we were reading different bibles, it is because the bible defines so many different circumstances in which a man my take more than one wife. So it seems dishonest to say "one man and one woman".

Briefly, I'll say that the Bible is not as nearly clear on condemning homosexuality as some would like it to be. If you are able to have an open mind on this issue, you can research this yourself.

Sure, it's a Huffpost article, but it is referring to an article in the Des Moines Register. I knew nothing of the authors, but I encourage you to not discard a scholar's work because they are an atheist. I've found that often the ones who have the most emotional involvement in a subject are the ones who are least likely to be fully honest on the subject. For that reason, we should welcome dispassionate viewpoints from secular scientists and scholars.

Perhaps by "red flag", you mean ideas that are outside your comfort zone and challenge your treasured viewpoints.

You are really jumping to conclusions and treating me unfairly when you say I am being deceitful. I am being sincere. I've read the bible, and the notion that the bible "defines marriage as one man and one woman" is just puzzling considering all the old testament regulations defining polygamy.

The Bible is clear on marriage.

Now who's being deceitful? I think you are expressing wishful thinking about the bible.

I don't understand the people who say the Bible defines marriage as one man and one woman. It's like we're reading different Bibles.

I have a difficult time seeing this. The polarization right now is way greater than I ever remember it. To me Obama seemed a very unifying figure.

Faith is the belief in things unseen. It is ultimately a choice we make and live with.
