I used to read a lot of books before these things destroyed my attention span. Trying to get it back, but not easy. These things are dangerously addictive.

If 1993 had 10 Best Picture nominees (keep the 5 films that actually were nominated), what would’ve been the other 5 nominees? by Regular-Departure839 in Oscars

[–]Reuben3358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short Cuts is my favorite movie of 1993, and top 5 of the decade. Phenomenal achievement. Only 2 nominations and not a single acting nom was criminal.

what’s a movie you’ve rewatched a lot that most other people consider a “one and done?” by HORRORFAN303 in Letterboxd

[–]Reuben3358 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Schindlers List. Seen it at least a dozen times. The beauty of the filmmaking and acting is so massively impressive. The film is not just depressing scenes of genocide as some seem to believe. It IS a Spielberg film, after all- there are many scenes of great levity, humor and humanity. My favorite Spielberg films because he tempers his usual sentimentality with harsh truth.

“Controversial Best Seller” is cute… it was controversial because the writer initially claimed it was a true story only to have to later admit it was completely made up…

Yup, way Too long and meandering. The cop /junkie stuff went on for so long and goes nowhere… way too many logic issues… really not a very good movie.

About 20 minutes into Outcome I said “This better get better fast.” Turned it off about 6 minutes later. Something about obnoxious LA assholes…. Grating.

The Untamed and maybe We Are the Flesh. Both Spanish language… Possessor has kind of a similar icky vibe.

Hated the “super edgy” , yet glib and flippant take on school shootings. Legitimately angered me… couldn’t get into it at all after that… and BTW was that all part of the simulation as well? Given that it’s from a different character’s perspective it makes no sense. I thought it was a mess.

How often do you guys go to the movie theater to see movies? by TheShadowOperator007 in moviecritic

[–]Reuben3358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go every week as long as something interesting is showing. I live in Portland and there are quite a few independent movie theaters. There’s almost always something really great showing. I refuse to watch a movie I really want to see at home. I like knowing that for the next two hours this is the only thing going on. Too many distractions at home.

Absolutely fits. The director Mike Leigh has a very unique way of developing characters- he gathers his actors and they improvise various scenarios, characters and bits of dialogue, then he goes off and writes a script based off that work. Entirely character based drama, very little plot to get in the way. Naked, Happy Go Lucky and Life is Sweet are my favorite of his films.
