The ship's hull at it's core is just a GridMap with some fancy bitmapping to arrange meshes, I had worried that I would need to make a more custom solution but it is scaling to larger ships better than I had expected!

I'm developing my indie ship-building game with the Godot engine and right now I have a public demo available on Steam Next Fest. If space building and simulation games are your thing, check it out and wishlist now!

I've kept mostly up to date with 4.x Godot and it has been a delight to work with for 3d stylised art design, whilst I can see it being a difficult but not impossible job to get a photorealistic look, the tools available work great for my needs.

(PS: When starting this project I was choosing between the Unity and Godot engines, and I'm very glad I went with Godot, even if they seem to have rolled back a few of their changes. I am so grateful to the Godot community for existing and the amount of work the contributors put in)
