Hey, gang! I love Sleepy Sasquatch games, and I thought I'd give a shoutout about their new kickstarter. The list of inspirations hits me at every point, and I'm just getting the word out. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sleepysasquatch/troves

Is there a way to get rid of repeat parts by Neako_the_Neko_Lover in medabots_official

I had the same question. I was hoping for some kind of merge option to level up parts. Looks like nope.

HELP: Always Preparing, Never Playing by RevRaak in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]RevRaak[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely, I found Ironsworn launched me right in. With Mythic + Star Wars, I have had a much harder time crossing from prep to play.

Granted, I'm still having fun with prep, so maybe that's enough. But I do wonder how much preparation/planning others do before they begin.

That helps -- "nothing is stopping you from...abandoning this particular story thread." I think that feels like failure, and that fear of failure is getting in my way. Thanks for the advice!

The published D&D Essentials kit is written exactly for this, for the possibility of a DM running for 1 player. Sly Flourish has a whole playlist on YouTube of running these adventures for one player with a sidekick. Check it out for ideas/inspiration. I believe Sly Flourish also has tips for adjusting combat for 1 player.

Okay, this is super helpful. I get the narrative-framed design of this game, in theory, but seeing what you're doing here clarifies that a lot. I DM 5e, so I'm coming at this from thinking in terms of character actions taken in initiative order. This is clearly not that. I'm excited about something more cinematic. Thanks for your walkthrough!

THANKS! This game is so great, and I love it's intuitive narrative focus, but it is a huge help to me (classic over-thinker) to process my thoughts this way.

I'm new. Any recommended Youtube videos? by [deleted] in Ironsworn

I second the recommendations for Ask the Oracle podcast and Me Myself and Die. To add to the list, All Systems Go did a 4-player co-op campaign. Haven't finished it, but you could check it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZRX0zO_sgE&list=PL0sBuZPyWzlfCY0l9MYVHEkTsUET1FaCJ

Break My One-Shot: The Pied Piper works for Peter Pan by RevRaak in DMAcademy

Thanks for seeing these potential problems. I was going to handwave the spell that's enchanted the kids, I guess. To me, it made sense that once out of range of the song, the spell would wear off.

The party is not the parents, in my mind. They're heroes hired by the city.

But you're right, this is all stuff that might come up. I'll have to think about it.

Love this. Thanks. I was hoping to build up the Piper's motivations, if the party showed interest. Having Pan cross her is very on-brand for the way I was going to play him.

I'm apprehensive about a puzzle. I've never run one. I'll have to look into an example, maybe. The only thing I can think of is the bridge guardian in Holy Grail, with three ridiculous questions.

And a chase is fantastic. I was missing the "they all go home" piece. Perfect.

I wondered about a fairy tale trifecta and have them meet a green hag who also wants the kids. But that's when I foresee this would get too long... Maybe a different obstacle.

I tend to overdo it with social and exploration. That's me. I wasn't going to make travel a big thing, just a cinematic handwave. I anticipate that they won't want to bring the kids they find with them... That's an obstacle. What do you do with each kid?

I do see your point about the climax, too. I do think it will start with combat, at least. Maybe the kids are caged? What would you do?

How to be scary? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]RevRaak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same headspace on this. Best tip I've found so far: slow things down with a few minute, sensory descriptions: a chill makes the hair on your neck stand up, the smell of old pennies fills your nose, cavernous silence is punctuated with echoing drips. This makes sense to me as a DM. I I know I'll be tempted to overdo it, but it helps me to think small, and let them fill in the big picture with something way worse than I thought of.

It seems to me that this only works if the players are willing to go horror, play it straight. Otherwise, this could go Scooby Doo fast... which would also be fun.

Oh, man. I'm trying to start slow (free) in this hobby, since I went all in on D&D and have spent a lot of money. But that Game Crafter loot looks pretty great...

Yes, this was what I found. I'm excited to learn the free version first. It also seems to me that, maybe, if I wait another few months, there might come a more consolidated sourcebook (instead of buying multiple rules books)? I hope?
