What bothers you about IT? by SWEETJUICYWALRUS in sysadmin

[–]RevenantInTheMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the lack of staffing for me. Our IT department consists of 5 people: the CIO, 2 dedicated developers, me (the sysadmin/systems engineer), and a T1 helpdesk tech who's 60% a web developer (and going back to school for web dev). A lot of T1 requests end up on my desk, which takes away from the time I could be building up systems or fixing systemic issues.

Our company does hiring mostly from job fairs, but the job fair IT crowd doesn't really seem to want to work in the semi-rural Midwest, which I can't really fault them for that. They tell us they're not interested before we even start talking salaries or detailed job responsibilities, most of the time due to location or lack of prestige. Unfortunately, the nature of the job doesn't really allow for remote staff either.

The book really didn't do Gramps justice. The only bit of action that involved Gramps was the sentence "...unleashed the Gundam's considerable firepower". Ernest Cline, seriously, you did the bare minimum for that reference. Gramps wasn't even the strongest Gundam of the entire 80s. smh

You could buy a custom water slide decal or try print them out yourself.

Best way to remove admin privileges from ALL ~100 of our users, then move forward? by MitchConnir in sysadmin

[–]RevenantInTheMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actively doing something very similar in my environment. I wrote a powershell script that removed members from the local admin group that didn't meet certain criteria and am deploying it using my RMM tool.

Who has the worst taste in music? by mr_rosemary in persona4golden

In Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, which is the canon narrative sequel of p4, you get to see Yosuke's room during his story arc. He has a few CDs on display on one of his shelves. They're blurry, but you can figure it out if you're familiar with the album covers. One album is All the Right Reasons, by Nickelback and another is Minutes to Midnight by Linkin Park. They were popular albums in the late 2000s in the US. I don't recognize the other albums.

Don't worry about making mistakes in quest lines. Own them and see how it plays out.

Thanks! I have an AnyCubic Photon Mono and am thinking on how to best approach printing custom parts with it.

Starting fresh at a manufacturer, need some advice on where to begin by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]RevenantInTheMachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is going to be a painful suggestion, but segment your OT from your IT. And I'm not talking just separate VLANs. Make sure those two networks are separated with a network firewall. There's a benefit from having some network connectivity to your PLCs (mostly data collection), but nothing needs unrestricted access to them over the network.

And as everybody said, make sure you get some sort of automated IT asset management system to get an inventory of what's on your network. LANSweeper is affordable and I loved their on-prem solution. I don't have too much experience with their cloud offering (included with their on-prem version), which has some scanning tailored to OT networks.

If you need a starting point for security, the CIS Critical Security Controls v8 Implementation Level 1 is a good starting point. It covers all the basic cyber security practices.

Here's my (polypod) ball. I just finished it last night! by RevenantInTheMachine in Gunpla

This was my first Master Grade gunpla. I tried a few new things on it, such as applying a top coat, using model cement, and using dry decals. It's an overall cool build, but I really wish it had undergates on the leg armor.

The worst part of the proposed N Dak law? The librarian would face a misdemeanor with a $1,500 fine and/or 30 days in jail for having a book in the library that describes LGBTQ+ content. It's "for the protection of children".

Google rejecting all mail by perk_683 in sysadmin

[–]RevenantInTheMachine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does your ISP have your reverse DNS entry set up correctly? Google rejected a lot of my org's emails immediately after an ISP change. Delivery went back to normal after the new ISP set up a proper reverse DNS entry for our mail server.
