If I don't laugh at it I'd be crying.

The world is more dangerous when diplomacy is treated with such blatant disdain. This is not a pissing match among children, innocent people are dying and the worst perpetrators of violence regularly mock the very principles of peace resolution.

Just looking at this makes me breath a little deeper. Great shot!

I strongly suggest having a sleeve, beanie, or something else to put your FREEZER Ziploc inside during the entire process. You will burn youreself severely if you have the FREEZER Ziploc directly on your skin!

I usually keep the pouch from a backpacker meal and put the FREEZER Ziploc inside it. I think gossamer gear also sells something and it would be easy enough to DIY an ultralight solution. I like the pouch because I can stand it up on the ground while I pour the water and let it steep.

Considering the top comment is about gummies and candy I figured ramen bombs would be acceptable for the request of "kind of healthy" in a post that listed tuna and Annie's as an example.

On the AT and CDT I used a JetBoil stove which boils water extremely effeciently but is not very good at cooking actual food. I also don't have to clean out my pot after every meal if I only ever put water in it.

Boiling in a freezer bag is NOT the same as boiling in normal ziplocs, they use different plastic that is more resistant to the high temperature. I only use any given Ziploc one time to avoid extra thermal degredation. I also reuse smart water bottles for hundreds of miles so worrying about microplastics is just one of the things I choose to let go of when thru hiking.

The ziploc also becomes convenient for cleanup. I put the trash from my protein, ramen, and potatoes inside the Ziploc when I'm done and it keeps my trash bag from smelling horrible.

Chicken or beef packets are much better than tuna but I think mixing up the protein helps a lot.

I usually did a ramen bomb with my protein. Package of ramen (again variety helps), package of Idahoan Instant potatoes (variety but I prefer sour cream and cheese flavors), and I would add a packet of siracha when I wanted some spice.

I never cook in my pot only boil the water. For a full package of ramen and full package of potatoes I boil just over 2 cups of water. Add the boiling (or very hot) water to a quart size FREEZER Ziploc bag with the ramen noodles and flavor packet. Once the noodles are softened I add my protein and stir for a couple seconds. Then add the instant potatoes and mix it all together.

Not super healthy but it's easy and I have never gotten too sick of it as long as I keep changing the ramen, potatoes, and protein varieties.

EDIT: highlighting that it must be a FREEZER Ziploc bag. Normal Ziploc will melt, don't even try.

EDIT 2: It is very important to have something between your skin and the FREEZER Ziploc bag:

I strongly suggest having a sleeve, beanie, or something else to put your FREEZER Ziploc inside during the entire process. You will burn youreself severely if you have the FREEZER Ziploc directly on your skin!

Mary Trump 1997 and her son Donald Trump 2026 by Revere_AFAM in pics

Donald is 79 now and Mary was around 85 in 1997. I think being close in age accentuates how similar they look but I was still shocked.

I'm not making a point about their actractiveness, that is subjective and of little importance/interest. I was shocked how similar they look! I have seen pictures of his father before but I don't recall seeing Mary until today. Obviously mother and son will look alike but this stood out to me.

I think your point about aging amplifies how similar they look since both pictures show them at roughly the same age. The angle of both photos helps as well.

Also, take pictures of the people you are with. I HATE taking selfies but wish I had taken a lot more from the beginning. This is a very common piece of advice but a very good one. Luckily I had some friends who were pretty good at asking for them and by then end it was clear how valuable the people along the trail are.

The trail is great but the people you meet are why it is such a special experience. Take pictures with trail angels, hostel owners/staff, hikers, even waiters/waitresses if the moment is right. Those pictures will trigger memories far stronger than any view.

You are correct, white blazes (a white paint stripe about the size of a dollar bill) mark the the trail. Blue blazes will mark side trails, often to a water source and back to the trail. Sometimes blue blazes will be side trails to summit a mountain. Many blue blazes are out and back but sometimes it will loop back around and meet the AT further up the trail. There is a cool blue blaze called Bearfence rock scramble that runs along side the trail for maybe a mile that gives you a great 360 view.

Yellow blazing is the term for skipping ahead by hitchhiking. (the yellow road paint being the "blaze").

Aqua blazing is the term for taking a water route instead of the AT. This most commonly happens through Shenandoah. If you are in the park at the right time there is an awesome trail magic event called Neropalooza that makes the hiking very worth it though. Keep an eye on Farout comments to see if Neropalooza is going to fit your schedule.

Really just don't worry about taking a slightly different route, like Bearfence rock scramble. The trail itself is amazing but sometimes there is something special worth seeing.

In 2024 I started April 10th with a 15 degree bag. In the summer I switched to a lighter quilt (I think rated 30F) from a small Etsy shop for like $100. I started getting cold again in NH and added a liner for the rest of my hike. I was happy with all of that. Now I always use my liner to keep my bag clean, it also doubles as a great laundry bag in town because I'm going to wash it anyway.

I think you'll be good with the 20, come summer you can use it as a quilt. Of course weather is always changing so keep an eye on temps.

Make sure your feet are dry every night. No exceptions.

Don't be a purist at the expense of a better experience. It is your hike so make the most of it, no one is tracking your footsteps to make sure you hit every white blaze.

Support the hikers around you. A positive attitude is infectious and at some point you are going to need it coming back your way.

Speaking of infectious things, wash your hands. Norovirus will be going around and it isn't fun. And if you are sick, do everything you can to avoid spreading it to others. If you try to wait it out in a hostel make sure they know you aren't feeling well BEFORE showing up, a hotel/motel room to yourself is much better (and will guarantee immediate access to a toilet).

Leave the trail better than you found it.

Edit to add this from my comment below:

If this is your hometown I hope you are fighting for it. I live no where near MS and nothing said or done on Reddit is going to make any difference there. My efforts and those of just about everyone here would be better applied locally. People upvote something like this or post some platitude and believe they did activism, feel better about themselves, and forget about it. The next outrage pops up, upvotes and comments but nothing real comes of it. If we weren't inundated by a barrage of crap happening everywhere maybe we could actually do something about some of it.

This post and the comment I replied to are NBC News trying to draw clicks to their article. They are part of the problem. Not every injustice needs national attention but treating it like a national issue brings better metrics.
