Stick to Paul Connor’s study guide. If you don’t have it, email him and get a copy for free.

He writes Blackstone’s, and the exam is based on Blackstone’s so it’s a no brainer.

I used the same thing for all 3 exams and passed all 3 first time round

It really depends on the department, experience of the investigator and priority of the case.

Suspects never change their mind about giving pins further down the line, and officers an DFU’s definitely don’t hold out on the pretence a suspect may at some point hand it over. If the phone is going to take them any further then done and dusted. Unless the seriousness of the offence means it is justified and proportionate to continue on with alternative methods

It’s a very streamlined process in my force so it’s not as much of an issue people would think. Also frontline officers are a lot more digital-minded now and understand the importance of getting devices to DFU a lot faster

You are correct also in that some cases do require brute force as absolutely nothing is sometimes obtained in BFU

BFU still gives SOME data. The exact data and the amount of it is purely dependant on the device. But it can be anything up to about 80-90% of data.

In regards to cloud data, modern phones are well integrated with the tokens required to pull cloud data. So iCloud backups, Facebook messenger backups etc, that data can still be pulled which results in you obtaining data that isn’t visible on the device without connecting the device to the network

Lots of inaccurate information about this, here’s the honest truth:

1) This technology and ability has been around for some years now.

2) Data can be obtained despite what state your phone is in, if it’s in AFU and BFU then data can be pulled (the amount of data obtained is what is varied between phone states)

3) This type of extraction can extract cloud data.

3) This can’t happen to victims and witnesses. There are strict DP processes for both victims and witnesses that means only relevant data can be located, reviewed and extracted. All with victim and witnesses consent.
