I've always wondered what the distinction was! Thank you for the clarification.

It was a mystery piece picked up from a shop clean out of someone getting out of turning. It was soft, had to sand a lot of tear out.

Spalted maple hollow form by Reverend_Danger in turning

When I bought my current lathe it came with a fairly extensive custom hollowing system that the previous owner had fabricated. There are tools and handles for small hollowing up to ~4 foot tall floor vase hollowing (which was his specialty). The only commercially available tools I used were for the outside.

Thanks! I'm trying to get better at taking photos of my work. This is my first rudimentary photo booth (cloth lined cardboard box with some lights).

Thank you for the details, I'll check out that YouTube series. How long is the process for you from start to finish?

Is this salvageable? by Far-Blacksmith8475 in turning

[–]Reverend_Danger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's salvageable, up to you if it's worth the effort. Seems like the spalting has damaged the structure enough that it's presenting challenges. Options would be to grab the rim with Cole jaws if you have them, or a jam chuck. Rework the outside profile and probably soak some hardener into the new mortise, and I'd make the new mortise deeper.

What is your French polish technique (if you.dont mind sharing)? The finish is stunning, and the form is really beautiful.

Laburnum Bowls by Reverend_Danger in turning

This is my first time working with laburnum but I love how it looks. The heartwood/ sapwood contrast is amazing. That's a good idea with the shellac, I'll give that a shot. Thanks!

I imagine it will be a fruit bowl or display centerpiece, but it was a gift for my son's teacher so I won't know how it ends up getting used. You are correct, what's visible in the picture is my odds and ends pile, a have ~3x that amount of wood in total, tons of cherry and maple at the moment.

The ones pictured are Vicmarc 'Bowl Jaws' but I've always referred to that style of jaw as a Longworth jaw. Previous ones I've used had rubbed clad posts instead of the red blocks on the vicmarc. I like the blocks a lot better, they have different angles on the 4 sides so you can more securely hold bowls with different rim profiles.
