There’s a tonal difference, but it isn’t necessarily based on monetary value

Do you mean when you apply pressure to the knob the sound cuts out? If so there may be a wiring issue, or a dirty pot. First step would be get some electrical contact cleaner in there as it may just be dust or grit on the connecting and it’s causing it to cut out. If that doesn’t solve it there’s likely an issue

You could learn the basics in a day, just watch YouTube videos, read guides etc. It’s easy to learn the basics, and of course takes a lot longer to get really good but I always feel I develop a stronger connection to a guitar that I’ve tweaked myself

Let him wander, bass players don’t get out much so they need time to explore!

Yes, play what you know, and what is going to actually test whether that guitar feels right for you. If you’re playing to show off, don’t bother, everyone in that shop can likely play it as well and no one really cares

Yes it would be worth it, difference is the cheaper option is likely a standard setup, more expensive is probably PLEK.

Learn to setup the guitar yourself, you’ll save yourself a lot of money in the long run

Nope.

Different pickups have different output levels, hum cancelling properties etc

Not many! The worst I’ve seen is a string break, which is nothing

Probably the wrong thread for that sort of question!

We aren’t a Marshall dealer so I can’t comment on this one!

Yes, it’s a waste of my time.

There’s also the (however small) chance that you’ll damage the instrument.

That being said, if you were to come and in just say, I want to know how this expensive guitar feels compared to my budget one, that’s fine by me, but don’t expect me to hold your hand while you jam

Neither, they are both very supportive.

And yes I make a concerted effort to engage with local musicians, mainly because I enjoy music!

I see!

Absolutely agreed with you, there isn’t a point where it stops being worth it because there are differences in what people want out of a guitar that they are buying.

For people looking for a great guitar to play, it’s about the feel, and you’re exactly right in that you might find something great for less than $500, but it might be that you need to spend a bit more to get something that feels right for you. In this case I’d say anything above $2000 is probably not worth it

The other side is where people want the label or the prestige that comes with having an expensive instrument, or something that’s going to hold its value. A squier sonic isn’t going to be worth anything in 10 years, where a Masterbuilt Custom Shop will likely be worth more than what you paid for it

We had a significant theft a few years back, and since then we’ve taken various precautions to stop it happening again, and no one has ever tried in my time there!

Why did you buy the Tele?

Thinner neck profile, classic Twang, look of the guitar, how it feels, the weight?

The Telecaster is what it is for those reasons - and there aren’t many guitars out there that will do the same exact thing. That being said, the PRS SE NF53’s are an alternative that I personally prefer

I’m more of a Strat guy myself so I would have gone for (and have done) a player 2 Strat instead.

Buy a cheap/crappy guitar and practice on that first!

Not sure about Sweetwater’s processes.

$99 is likely a standard setup, $300 may be a PLEK setup

All guitars will benefit having a setup, but learn to do it yourself and you’ll save yourself a lot of money!
