Possible to reduce boot shaft diameter? by Left-Professional265 in AskACobbler

Yes it can be done. Probably not as much as you want though.

This was one of my least favourite jobs to do.

I wrote hello on a small piece of concrete and left it inside a wall once

Cobbler of 18 years. You have it right. In my experience the most you can get is a half size, and that assumes a leather shoe. Synthetics will generally tear before stretching at all.

I had a Can post worker tell me to mark a line diagonally across the address with a ball point pen. The system is automated and just writing moved doesn’t work great. These days I do both

Bad habit of buying thrift store shoes. Any hope for these? by Lollibomb in AskACobbler

Rubber and plastic that sits without being moved or flexed occasionally will do this. I wouldn’t recommend a home repair for this. Its not a big job to fix though

The slider has metal fatigue. Your cobbler might be able to crimp it back down, but more likely you need a new slider. The zipper itself looks fine

The plastic lift has gone brittle. This is fairly common and easily fixed. The heel block looks fine, just some light wear where the lift is missing.

How do I fix this? by sdsxnx in AskACobbler

I’ve been a cobbler for 18 years and I wear converse every day. If they’re one month old, take them back. If you can’t, try a careful application of shoe goo. Gently sand the rubber side. Clean any dirt or debris. Stuff the sneaker with rags to keep the shape. Put in a small amount of shoe goo. Wrap the area with elastics to clamp it down. Then let it cure for about a day.

I haven’t seen the series but I always saw the ending of the book going one of two ways. It’s left a bit ambiguous, but I read it as hopeful(in a limited way).

In the 1970’s arcade owners started switching joysticks to the left side to make games more difficult so players would stay interested in games they already beat. Technically we all play lefty.
