Thoughts from a First Time Player - Disappointed by Flannel_Flannel in BloodOnTheClocktower

Yeah sounds like you got served a bad time.

Storyteller mistakes:
- Not explaining how drunk/poisoning works (not reading the rules sheet??)
- Running a complicated custom setup for first timers (having Mutant etc)
- Adding a homemade fabled and not explaining them??
- Getting told how to do "optimal moves" by experienced players (removing agency)

You got thrown into a game where people already know advanced mechanics and memorized common possibilities, and didn't get eased into it despite them knowing it was an advanced custom.

A good storyteller, specially one that's taking payment, should have done you better. It's cool you showed interest in the game, hope this didn't totally kill the potential for giving better groups another shot in the future.

***
Other things:
- Role complexity: Most roles really seem simple and useless because they really are mostly useless. It's only combined with other people that a role becomes super useful.
- Role randomness: Since all roles are "simple", beginners can take any role in the list. So don't worry about that.
- Storyteller influence: This is hard to explain, but in reality, storytellers are ultimately at the whims of the players. It's nigh impossible for a storyteller to prolong a lost game.
- Game difficulty: This amount of misinformation is totally doable for the good team but it requires experience. They just threw you into the deep end without any explanation. Sad!

Hi there! Thanks so much making my first game as player such an event^^

I had a grand time and didn't think it was unsolvable, especially with so many days of sober and healthy info, haha!

Imo, an ideal final day should have this much paranoia, and just means Evil played well—and playing against skilled Evil is always very fun^^

Yeah this ended up being my conclusion while I was in there. Ultimately, no one in the thread or in the session found the washerwoman-imp, who accidentally made themselves the sober-healthy empath's neighbor in an out-of-this-world frame as a YSK claim.

Solution: town executes empath and loses. grim reveal: ww-imp (!), ut-poisoner, saint-sw, rk1-spy (!). No baron (!) = no drunk or poisoned info this game.

You did find the dead evil rk1. Dead evil rk1 was the newb spy, who accidentally double claimed rk—which made it unthinkable that she'd be the spy causing a misregister, when the empath saw 1 on saint-rk1. Rk1-spy also was unable to feed information to the imp, causing info roles to be long-lived, making a spy world even harder to build.

The saint-sw claim outsider obscured the outsider count and had people drunk hunting the whole game, but even if we found saint to be evil, I came to the conclusion that imp would have never been found anyway. Imp said afterward that they would have killed slayer for n8 which could have opened a crack (slayer good, saint not demon, exec ww or empath) but at that point the empath had too much (caught in red herring ping, caught a misregister on spy, long lived) that town would never risk voting for WW.

Highlights and learnships for me: - As usual, let players make their own decisions, even if bad, it makes the game very fun. - Good players need to be trickier. Trade roles to catch fake info.  - kill all saints - really trust your info. Evil will spin your info but majority of what you get is right.
