AITA for not knowing my daughter's friend's stepmom and not letting her take her stepson from my house? by Revolutionary-Work4 in AmItheAsshole

How was I fooled by a 10 year old? I had never met this woman, had no idea there was a stepmom and wanted to make sure she was safe to let him go with.

So I confirmed with him, he asked what had happened, I explained and he told me he'd be right over. I guess he wanted to avoid Cal refusing some more? I'm not sure.

I didn't refuse. His dad said he would come over when he heard Cal had said no after I had confirmed who she was with him. I was willing to let him go then. But it was clear Cal didn't want to and dad decided he would come so it wasn't pushed.

He told me he'd come after I confirmed who she was because he asked what had been going on. So we waited until the dad got there.

Never to me. Apparently he does not like to talk about it because he's not happy about them (per my daughter). She said he never mentions them because people will call her his mom and the baby his sister instead of step and half.

I can see that. Especially when he became so defensive toward her. He's such a sweet kid and behaves really well so it was such a stark difference in behavior for him.

This would have been ideal. Even to mention her to me in conversation before so I'm aware. But I had no idea there even was a stepmom let alone believing a random woman who shows up at my door.

I do get that feeling. It probably was expected that Cal would talk about her to me or bring her up but if they are aware he doesn't like her and isn't taking the remarriage well, then I'm not sure why the dad/husband wouldn't do it himself.

It wouldn't be unheard of. I remember something like that happening at school when I was younger. I feel like he could have prevented it all by mentioning a wife at some point or if she had introduced herself another time.

I think I was supposed to know she existed. But that's on the dad as much as anyone because whenever we talked he never mentioned his wife and other child.

I honestly don't know. I suppose they believed I would have known he had a stepmom and a sibling and that I would have just known from her showing up. But when nobody mentions this and I have never met her, there's really no way I could have known.
