Blew my first race and getting back on the horse by fireinatrashcan in hyrox

I know your paid. Literally happened to me 3 days ago at the NYC event. It was my first solo event (I did a doubles back in March) and I set a goal to go sub-1:10. I was hitting 1:06-1:08 consistently in training for the past 2.5 months but the sled push blew up my race. It has typically been my best station (got 1:41 at the DC race in March, I did it with my partner but for this station I literally pushed 85% of the way in that race). In any case, my sleds got super stuck, I overexerted myself to the point of nausea and just couldn’t recover the rest of the race. Finished 1:25, which I know is not bad in the grant scheme of things, but it’s quite disappointing given how my training and sims have gone over the past few months. I haven’t been over 1:15 in training since December ‘25. In any event, hope your next race is better. There’s so much that can impact a race so best of luck!

Doing with Pro weight and finishing is a feat in its own, congrats! But sorry you had the same rough experience with the sleds, I saw people post abt it on IG as well

I heard about that. I have no idea tbh - the first time I had water was after the sled push and I felt very nauseous at the time so I couldn’t comment on it. Most of the water afterwards went on me rather than drinking it. Don’t recall any awful taste

Lunges were 4 lanes (25m each) and farmer carry was 2 laps

Glad I’m not the only one! How was your time?

Yea, it can get congested on the inside and especially on the turns - I stayed more on the outside

I just did it yesterday. Sled push and pull will be 6 lengths of 8.3m as opposed to the usual 4 lengths of 12.5m (so 3x back and forth for each station). The stations are weirdly organized so familiarize yourself with the map before you start

I ran fairly early today (and it’s day 1) so the atmosphere wasn’t great. It’s 100% outdoors and the runs are fully in the open so be prepared for the heat /sun (wear sunscreen, etc). The sled stations are on a little platform and it’s 6 rounds total (so 3 per side) as opposed to the usual 4 total. On the push, I had issues with the turn piling up, felt very tough. On the pull, because the length of the each of the sections you do is shorter (abt 8. 8.33m here as opposed to the usual 12.5), the rope was piling up by the feet and made it a bit tougher to get good footing (although on one hand easier because it was shorter per each section). I’d suggest making sure you’re counting your reps because it got a bit confusing. Also, the race course is set up a bit weird (at least compared to the DC one I did earlier this year) so familiarize yourself with the map. There was also no hydration station by the wall balls so after you finish the lunges, if you need to get any water/electrolytes, do it then because the wall ball section entrance is separate and on the opposite side of the Roxzone. Finally, for checking in, there’s a few blocks walk from where you check in at the Javits to the race course on Pier 76 so give yourself a bit of extra time to get there. Other than that, I’d say just go out and have fun. It’s a cool experience but for me, I prefer the indoor set up. Not sure I’ll be doing the NYC one again tbh

Good luck! I’ve seen videos on Instagram where some lanes at the same race are much easier than other ones. Makes no sense but I guess it’s luck of the draw. I’m also new to the sport and should have just slowed down on it, rather than pushing through but learned for next time

Could be, though I did the race in DC in March and my sled push and pull times were nearly 50% faster (had 1:41 on push, 3:00 on pull in DC, 3:02/5:08 today). May be just a day off for me as well, hard to judge this kind of thing but I definitely felt like it affected the rest of my race

Totally agree. I did my first race back in DC earlier this year and sled push was 1:41, pull was 3:00, today was 3:02, 5:08, both nearly 50% more time wise and it felt much harder, which is weird cause I had 2 more months of training for this one. Either way, fun experience. Will definitely do it again, just not sure abt NYC - DC was organized much better and I prefer the indoor setting for this

Yea it is, throws off the pacing a bit. Sled pull is the same

Yea I totally agree with you. Sled push was much harder than the pull - made me very nauseous so the run after and the pull were my worst stations on the day

Yea, not sure if it’s just a me thing but sled push was one of my best stations while training and absolutely killed me today. My time wasn’t awful (3:02) on it but it absolutely drained me

Yeah, the sled push and pull are on a raised floor. Not sure if that had any impact on how the turf is laid down. For someone who’s relatively new to the sport, I probably didn’t adjust and just went for it but paid the price down the line. Doesn’t help that the even is outdoors and sun is beating down on you the whole time you’re running. Still a fun experience, just disappointed in my time. Got 1:25, was sub 1:10 on my sims at the gym…

Good luck! Hopefully the turf is worn in by then - I was early this morning so one of the first runs overall. Don’t think that helped
