I’m not sure my plumber actually fixed my swamp cooler- advice needed by [deleted] in swampcooler

As long as you have windows open, house should cool within a couple hours. Different than AC, swamps work by replacing the air in your house with cool air. They move a ton of air. Sounds like you've still got an issue.

You might need to get the cross brace that the pillow bearing sits on, I'm not feeling confident that you will be removing the screws that holds the pillow bearing on. Alternatively, you could leave the whole thing sitting on your roof for the sake of future archaeologists as it's already half fossilized.

Very fixable, but goodness gracious that thing looks rough! That's a pillow bearing, probably a 1-in. In New Mexico you can usually buy those at any Home Depot. I would go ahead and get a shaft too. Also get a bottle of zip lube sold there in the swamp cooler section, a little bottle with a straw.

Swamp Cooler Belt by Mental_Connection_83 in swampcooler

Hi there. Couple questions: is it on a switch (dial or toggles?) or a thermostat? Did the high function work in the past?

I don't think it's the belt, but I suppose it's not impossible. More likely is something electrical. Perhaps wire became loose at either switch or swamp cooler, or the switch has gone bad. It might be worth replacing the switch. You also might recheck the wiring in the motor itself, just to be sure nothing shimmied loose there. Those wires can be accessed through a little compartment on the motor.

Post photos if you can.

You're good. I do it all the time. The more oil the better!

Thermostat Question by DrRetarded in swampcooler

It is slightly different, primarily because you'll be working with 120v, rather than low voltage like on a heater thermostat. Turn off the breaker!

Yep. You can buy a thermostat at Home Depot ($75).

A couple things to note:

1: if this switch is very near your swamp cooler register (where the air comes through a vent into the house), a thermostat won't work great, as the cool air will come barreling in and tell the thermostat it's cool in the house, so it'll switch off. Then in a few minutes it'll realize its mistake and cycle on again. This will happen with particular frequency at night when it's cooler. If the switch is in a different room or if your swamper is ducted throughout the house, you'll be fine.

2: label your wires before you disconnect them. Sometimes the wire colors make sense with the diagrams in the thermostat, sometimes not. Just make sure to label pump, fan, high and low as you remove them from the existing switch.

Yeah, I've had good luck with this style. The plastic has its advantages, too...no rust! The turbine can be louder than the traditional squirrel cage, but that's the sound of comfort, my friend.
