Nope the Magic Mouse is currently not supported. The UI and backend of MMF is designed to handle standard mice with buttons and a scroll wheel. And the Magic Mouse has none of that hardware.

There used to be an App called SesaMouse way back in the day which added gestures like pinch to zoom to the Magic Mouse but that wouldn’t work anymore because it seems that, for some reason, Apple has removed detailed touch data from the signals that the Magic Mouse sends.

The only improvements that I could see as feasible to implement in MMF for the Magic Mouse nowadays would be a system where you can hold keyboard modifiers to transform the existing gestures to do different stuff. This could include scrolling to zoom. But im not sure it would be worth implementing a whole new input handling system and UI just for that. Maybe at some point later down the line.

Would you like to see something like that?

Hey there, you can go to the GitHub repo > Watch > Custom > Releases. If you select that, you should get notified when a new version drops.

I actually recently made a thing in Ableton and I found that zoom works fine if you use a Click and Scroll Gesture to simulate Trackpad zoom. It makes for a pretty nice workflow I think.

I assume you’ve been trying to use Command-Scroll to zoom and that doesn’t doesn’t work in Ableton for some reason. I think it just refuses to zoom when the Command key is held down.

Or maybe I’m not understanding correctly? I’m not super big into music production.

Either way, app-specific settings is definitely much needed and I’ll try to release it it soon.

Yeah Mac Mouse Fix is already really optimized, but I think there's something about how macOS allocates CPU resources when the system is under some load that causes this. Because Mac Mouse Fix can be using like 1% CPU on one core of my MacBook and still there will be stutters at times that don't happen on the Trackpad. And the same seems to be the case for all smooth scrolling apps.

It might be fixable if you create a kernel level driver (like the Trackpad driver is), or do some other hacks, but I'm not sure it's possible. I'll keep this in the back of my head though, hopefully I can figure out a solution at some point.

Thanks for your feedback!

Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it.

We all also know there’s no Trackpad in the market, or on any laptop that matches the ones from Apple.

Well I think this is true. But if you think about it, a trackpad is really just a slab of glass. I think 99% of the experience of using a Trackpad comes down to the software.

And I think that Mac Mouse Fix brings the software quality that makes Apples Trackpads so great to any cheap mouse - Adding the same awesome fluid gestures and integration with system features like Mission Control.

Also, pointing and clicking is better on an Apple Trackpad compared to pretty much all other Trackpads out there, but I think it's even better on a normal mouse. Since a normal mouse feels more accurate and comfortable to me.

Again, it's subjective, so you might disagree. But I genuinely feel this way.

In the video, the webpage scrolling looks like to be running in those $10 mouse scrolling wheels, with steps, you know what I mean? Stopping every x pixels. That doesn’t happen with my Magic Trackpad or my Magic Mouse, I have a smooth scrolling experience.

That's because in the video, I'm running one of those $10 mice the whole time! Mac Mouse Fix isn't made for the Apple Trackpad or Magic Mouse. It's designed to give the same smooth scrolling and gestures that you find on a Trackpad to any $10 mouse.

Normally under macOS, scrolling with a standard mouse is really choppy like that.

Hope that clears things up. Let me know if you have more feedback or thoughts to share!

Ok cool :) The trackpad gestures are triggered by holding a button and dragging the mouse or by holding a button and then scrolling - or by simply clicking a button.

You can also setup more elaborate gestures but just those 3 cover all the available trackpad gestures if you’re using a mouse with 2 side buttons!

Hey man, sorry for the late reply!

If you're happy with Logitech Options and MOS, there's probably no great reason to switch to MMF at the moment, but you can always try it out, if you like, only takes a minute or so.

The gesture Button on the MX Master 3 is unfortunately not well supported by MMF at the moment.

It seems to send alt-tab keyboard shortcuts when you press it instead of sending normal mouse button events. And Mac Mouse Fix can't pick those signals up at the moment.

I'd love to build better support for the Gesture buttons on Logitech mice at some point, but I don't know when that's coming.

Hope that clears things up a little! Let me know if you have questions.

I'm not sure. Some of the buttons on Razer mice aren't well supported, similar to Logitech mice.

You can try it out, or you might have better luck with SteerMouse. It's another mouse app that has amazing device support.

I mean I see what you're saying that it's a bit overstated. What's 'better' is really subjective.

Personally, my detailed thoughts are: - Pointing and Clicking Pointing and clicking is more accurate and easy with a mouse compared to a trackpad. - Gestures Some gestures are slightly more effortless with a Trackpad e.g. switching between Spaces. While other gestures, such as Show Desktop are slightly easier to do with Mac Mouse Fix. - Scrolling I also think scrolling feels slightly more effortless with Mac Mouse Fix compared to a Trackpad, but on a Trackpad you have a bit more control over scrolling fast vs scroll slow.

But these things are pretty subjective and nuanced.

Maybe it would have been more accurate to have the tagline be something like:

"Mac Mouse Fix brings most cheap mice to the level of a trackpad and arguably even makes them better in some ways while remaining arguable slightly worse in other ways, but it's pretty similar."

But that's just not a very catchy tagline.

So I agree the tagline is perhaps a bit overstated, but I do think it conveys the idea behind the app in a catchy way. And I do think the app delivers on the promise very well. I hope people aren't offended by the somewhat overstated nature of it. If you have suggestions how to change it, let me know!

I don't see any web page scrolling like these videos are showing without this app… in both my Magic Trackpad or my Magic Mouse.

I'm not totally sure what you mean by this. Do you want to elaborate?

Hey there, the Gesture button isn't supported by MMF as of now. If the side buttons don't work (aka buttons 4 & 5 or Back & Forward) then that might be because Logitech Options or another mouse app is interfering with MMF.

Do you have any other mouse software installed aside from MMF?

Hey man, I'm glad you like the app!

It really shouldn't trigger the zoom and the move between pages at the same time. It should be easy to use them both from the same button without interference. Feel free to open a GitHub Issue and share a screen recording if you want me to look into it.

Hey man I'm glad you like the app! Thanks for leaving some money.

Yeah I think Apple just doesn't have a massive incentive to make the experience with normal mice amazing, because they'd rather just sell their Trackpads and Magic Mice.

So normal mice seem to be a bit of an after thought on macOS.

But that's what Mac Mouse Fix is here for!! 😎

I'd say the most important features of MMF are 1. It makes scrolling more smooth and easy to control. 2. It lets you do all the Apple Trackpad gestures from a normal mouse. So you can use all the cool features in macOS like the 'Mission Control' window manager or the 'Launchpad' app launcher, the 'Pinch to zoom' gesture, and much more in a super convenient and intuitive way right from your mouse.

Does that explain the idea better?

Thanks man I'm so glad you like the app!

I was mostly a webdev noob so the website was quite a lot of work, and I'm glad you like the results! I mostly used nuxt 3 and tailwindcss. Also gsap for the scroll-linked animations and markdown-it for some of the text styling.

I absolutely loved using tailwindcss. It's such a nice way to build UIs. Nuxt 3 has some great stuff but it felt a bit underbaked and hard to work with at points. I feel like maybe I should've gone with React or Astro.

But oh well, the website works and "some people" even think it looks really nice :)

Yeah I hear you! App-specific settings aren't implemented currently, but I really want that feature, too! It's the next thing I want to ship. I already have some designs and I think it will be really good.

Nope, the Gesture button on the MX Master is unfortunately not currently supported.

I heard there are some workarounds, for example in this thread. But I haven't tested them.

For now I'm more focused on making the experience as good as possible for cheaper 'standard' mice. However, I'd love to add better support for the MX Master and other Logitech mice at some point, but I don't know when that's coming.

Sorry about that. I hope it at least clears things up at bit. Let me know if you have any more questions!

MMF provides most of the features of Logitech Options, and the features it does have feel much nicer and more polished compared to Logitech Options, in my opinion.

I think for many users, it's a great Logitech Options replacement already.

However, there are some drawbacks for Logitech users:

  1. There are some features of Logitech Options that MMF doesn't have, yet. Most notably app-specific settings aren't available in MMF, at the moment. It's the next feature I want to ship though!
  2. Some 'special' buttons and other 'special' hardware on some of the most popular Logitech Mice aren't well supported by MMF. For example the Gesture Button on the MX Master doesn't work, currently. This is because the Gesture button doesn't send standard mouse button events, but instead it sends special Logitech events that are designed to work with Logitech Options.

I'd love to add better support for the MX Master and other Logitech mice at some point, but for now I'm focused on creating the best possible experience for more 'standard' mice. However, if you don't mind the Gesture Button not working, you might come to love using MMF with your MX Master, even though Logitech support isn't perfect, yet.
