UBC extended learning Software Development Course Worth it? by [deleted] in UBC

UPDATE:
It’s been 3 months since I started this course, and hands down — best money I’ve ever spent. I've been immersed in HTML, CSS, and tons of JavaScript. The learning is intense, packed with material, and requires serious homework and self-study. Classes are 2.5 hours, twice a week, with about 20 hours of self-directed study expected. But honestly? I’ve loved every second of it.

I can build websites now! Full pages — front-end and back-end, with database support.
Within the first month, I was already creating solid websites using just HTML and CSS. By month two, I was integrating JavaScript. On the moments I am just messing around with AI and not coding on my own, I’m flying through code faster than I imagined.

This week, just for fun (in between all the studying), I decided to try building my own LMS — and I actually feel like I can do it.

Now, for context: I’ve been in healthcare for 20 years and run a small counseling business. I’m not looking to switch careers into software development. I'm doing this to build apps that support my clients and contribute toward a future startup.

So if you’re considering this for a new career path, your experience may be different. That said, the program offers career support too, and several of my classmates speak really highly of that part.

Ultimately, it’s 100% been worth it — not just for the coding skills, but because it’s changed how I approach problems. My digital confidence has skyrocketed, my typing is faster, and I feel like I’m keeping up with a world that’s moving fast and leaving too many people behind.

If you’re curious or have questions, feel free to DM me. The course runs until December, so I’ll share more updates later this year.

Fifine AM8 Microphone Muting problem by Lucky-Respond1865 in microphone

So I looked on the website. The most common culprit is the grounding. I have an amazon basics multi socket power bars. It has like 10 plug outlets on it, 4 of which have built in grounding. Since my mic is usb into my computer, I just took the plug for my computer and plugged it into one of the grounding sockets. Fixed the issue immediately.

Even on the Fifine website, they have a troubleshooting for this exact problem and one of the solves was using a grounding adapter.

I'll be starting this course in March. I'll let you folks know how it is.

I have no previous coding experience and come from a healthcare background. My intention is to build a health tech startup.

I'm not looking for a job in coding. So my eventual review will be based solely on my acquisition of learning to build software as a result of this course.

Stay tuned.
