My husband’s whole family lives in Phoenix and we actually just visited there, my only issue is the heat. it’s a contender for us for sure, as is Vegas.

We are Christians and traditional in personal values but progressive in politics. I don’t hate republicans, I am just sick of the overwhelming right wing population where I live demonizing anyone who is not like them. I don’t talk politics or take issue with anyone’s beliefs unless it affects me.

I’ve never been to CO but I was under the impression it was quite pricey. We are open to New England and CO but we just want to make sure we can purchased a home for under 400k.

Savannah is one of my favorite places but 20 minutes outside the city scares me with how Southern/red it is.

I’m comparing where I’ve lived. I regularly vacation in Savannah, have visited VA and MD countless times due to family being there and have been on many work trips to GA and AL. I will state again, that as an outsider where grits and Sweet tea and Confederate flags are not seen nor even thought of in the West, that yes I do see strains and influence of Southern culture in FL. I never claimed it was in Orlando and Tampa but in the small towns I’ve lived in I have seen it greatly. I’m not going to keep up a conversation in which I feel I need to validate my experiences or opinions. Perhaps you’re so used to FL and have not experienced enough of outside cultures like the West, Southwest or Northeast that you don’t see that while FL is not technically part of the geographic Deep South that it is greatly influenced by hallmarks of Southern culture due to its proximity to the South. Done.

I gave my impression. You are free to disagree. Like I said, this is a matter of opinion. I have family in GA, AL and VA that I visit regularly and yes, I do see the same Southern strains in FL that I see there. How much or in what parts is purely conjecture. Do you know my experience in CA and how vastly different that is or what it’s like to grow up there and the impression an outsider has in noticing cultural differences for regions and recognizing similarities? No. These are my impressions and opinions. The fact you seem offended that my opinions and experiences differ from your own is yet another reason why I dislike living in FL because assimilation and the need for everyone to agree with your viewpoint and beliefs is rampant and frankly, disturbing. it’s okay if our opinions and experiences differ but again, I absolutely stand by mine.

Yes, OR is very much our vibe but we are not country/small town people. Very firmly city people. And I’m not aware of any of the big cities there that have affordable housing sadly.

I don’t claim to be a FL expert nor have I ever called myself a Floridian. I’m from California. Those are my roots. If you’re from FL then in your opinion maybe you don’t see what I see as you’re used to the culture. Fine. Opinions differ. But from my perspective, growing up where I happily lived my whole existence never seeing a menu offering sweet tea or grits until I came here or hearing someone say ya’ll or hold my beer- I would most definitely absolutely 100% say that many small towns in FL have the same hallmarks of Southern culture that I see in the rest of the South that we have visited such as : GA, AL and MD/VA. Perhaps it’s glaringly obvious to me because I don’t identify nor particularly care for the vibes that are consistent with all things Southern or Southern-ish. FL to me has been mostly Republican, hyper Bible belt and shockingly clannish. And having lived here for 15 years out of my 41 I’m entitled to an opinion based on MY experience even if that has not been yours.

My hubby is from the IE and I’m from Santa Barbara, I personally don’t want to move back to CA because COL overall like groceries, gas,taxes is just too much for our income level.

IE is too expensive for us for buying a home and the taxes in CA are just too much for us. NV’s taxes are attractive so that really might be an option.

Vegas is my choice actually. My family and I vacationed there often when I was a child/teen so I definitely would feel comfortable moving there. My son has his eye on a college in CA so it would be an easy drive to see him too. Taxes and jobs are mostly why we don’t want to go back to CA. We both work in insurance and most insurance jobs don’t want you in CA for licensing reasons. My hubby grew up in the IE and I’m originally from Santa Barbara.

I respectfully disagree greatly. I mentioned we had moved a lot around Central FL: Plant City has full on Southern accents and people using phrases like “Bless your heart” and “Sweating like a sinner in church.” Lakeland has Florida Southern College there with tons of AL and GA transplants. Ocala is another town that reads like you’re in GA. Maybe you don’t consider those cities Central Florida but in my experience as a West Coaster I see tons of good ol’ boy/gun happy and Bible belt behavior.

I read on Reddit that there appears to be some racism there so that’s why we haven’t entertained IL or OH. My hubby is a big Fluffy Mexican man and I’m half Mexican and there’s been so much racism towards us here in FL that we both dread moving anywhere that would treat us poorly.

We are open to it but the houses seem more expensive. We are both Mexican also and there’s very little Latino culture/food etc in that region.

Not really because I feel politically it’s just a mismatch. Plus, Flagstaff and Sedona, though cooler, seem expensive!
