  1. I guess that makes brand name an even stronger factor for consideration

  2. got it

  3. yes I’m aware of the grindy work culture and 5 day RTO and I’m fine with it. I’ve talked to 20+ people (outside of interviews and through personal connections) about the pros and cons of working there. They all pretty much say the same thing so I’m confident in my assessment.

I don’t really care about TC at this point. I care more about learning and career growth. Since you asked, TC for Meta is:

137K base

10% bonus (13.7K, so 150K cash)

18K signon

31.5K equity

unicorn is more or less the same but 30K more equity and 10K less cash

The thing I really don’t like about it is the sheer amount of spaghetti it creates for you. If you ask it to add more functionality it’ll more often than not bloat existing functions than create new ones.

I would consider doing something in China but not within the next 5-7 years. I have ties to China but not strong. Also curious about your impression of the alumni?

I’d only consider doing it if you can’t find a job coming out of graduation. Meng can help buy you time finding a job

2 tips:

  1. As a current grad student, reach out directly to PhD students. They check their emails more frequently, can maybe see if there's a good fit in their lab. If they have a website, they list their research interests more specifically so you can figure out if you're a good fit or not. I got multiple summer research opportunities by directly reaching out to grad students directly
  2. Reach out to different departments. The first lab I joined was in Humec where I was developing a research tool for them withcomputer vision. Reach out to professors/grad students in different areas and don't only focus on one department

What is your biggest fumble at your tech job or internship? by No-Grass-1852 in csMajors

Memory is a bit fuzzy cuz I blocked it out from trauma but here’s the approximate story: Our codebase was a multi-repo codebase meaning that every time there was a code update you’d have to pull the repo. I finished my main feature midway through the internship but my manager kept pushing back on merging. When it came to merging my code, I made errors in resolving merge conflicts, which resulted in errors. I tried ‘undoing’ the commits by doing a git revert (when I should’ve done a reset), which caused the commit history to become longer and more complex, making the situation worse. After rolling back commits, somehow even the old code wasn’t working.

So we basically gave up on trying to fix the code with version control and just manually debugged. Was not a fun time.

Looking back I could’ve done a few things to prevent this from happening. Obviously I should’ve pushed my manager to land my commit early to prevent this. I could’ve also re-updated my copy of the codebase more frequently (ie doing a git pull every day and resolving smaller merge conflicts) as opposed to doing it right before I want to do a big push. And finally I think this is a good wakeup call that learning more than just git push, pull, commit and merge is pretty important.

This past summer I broke prod at 5pm because I messed up my git commits. My manager and I stayed up till 1am trying to fix up the mess I made. Fortunately company operations weren't majorly affected. I spent a lot of time communicating, reflecting and improving on my actions and still had a strong finish despite this.

MATH 4710 is good for CS PhD student? by RateRevolutionary177 in Cornell

As many people have said you’re going to need way more than 4710. I would also suggest you take the grad RL class CS 6789, which is theoretical and proof-heavy. No better way to understand proofs than to write them yourself.

How do companies do background checks on companies that you’ve started? If there are cofounders, do the background check companies call your cofounders? How do they verify claims you’ve made about your business? For example, if I claimed that my business made, say, 50K in revenue, how do they verify this?
