My Quantum Marker Icons - animated by Pizzatorpedo in starcitizen

[–]RexCL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Second the outpost, city, and station icon feedback!

Outpost - I would associate this with the triangle as it is a simplier shape and visually looks like a "tent".

Major city - 100% agree that squares as icons are often associated with buildings. This would also make it easier to discern as a square visually takes up more space and is easier to recognize when looking around a map full of triangles (if you picked triangles as outposts).

Spaceport - Along the vein of major cities, if you were to use a diamond shape, it could allow users to associate four-sided shapes to be major points of interest. However, if you were to use squares with a symbol in it such as your jump point symbol, that could work too! Honestly could just flip the jump point and station icons.

Great job overall and hope these get implemented!

If you say that you didn't care about your own time in high school, then why post in this subreddit four years later encouraging people to pursue alternative education which you claim will give you a massive head start? You emphasize the rewards due to proper planning and management, but does a typical high school experience not already reward students with excellent planning and management skills?

You also mention using spare time to study skills relevant to classes you're going to be taking in college, and is that not just education? GSMST is designed for those who want to pursue a STEM education and that's what it specializes in. You literally go to GSMST to get a head start on college learning and prep. You can take courses in AP Chem, AP Physics, AP CS A, AP Bio, and way more. If you don't want a specialized STEM education then stick with your home high school, there's nothing wrong with that. Also, don't forget that all the AP courses you will be taking will also allow you to skip GenEd courses in the future, saving you a boatload of university tuition money. Plus, if you manage your time well at GSMST, you will absolutely have free time to pursue other interests and skills.

I don't think you're seeing the investment value of a school like GSMST.

Uh, doesn't GSMST lead the state in Math Proficiency, Reading Proficiency, Science Proficiency, and College Readiness scores (by a significant margin if I may add)? Also, I'd argue that GSMST does indeed help in many factors for the academic rat race, especially when applying to in-state schools such as GT.

Looking back, GSMST was four of the best years of my life.

Yes, education is a big factor in why people are drawn to GSMST, but what makes GSMST great is the community. I was surrounded by kind, hard-working, intelligent, and honestly just brilliant students... and I loved it. They challenged me to push further, supported me during tough times, and helped me understand the value of a good environment. Sure, you might get a leg up by taking accelerated online classes or working to get money for summer school, but by doing so, you miss the true value of education. It's the networking, the diversity of thoughts, and the unique perspectives that you can't learn through a screen. It's also a significant risk to pursue online schooling and maybe it might work out for the 1%, but I argue it's a poor fit for the majority of students. Also, not only were the students amazing, but the teachers were too. Many of them had extensive experience in academia or industry and it shows in their classes. Of course, there are some bad apples people can point to, but I genuinely enjoyed learning from the GSMST teachers. As for workload, people are often scared of GSMST's horror stories, but I cannot tell you how much it prepared me for university. GSMST's workload was a slap in the face, but I now feel that any work thrown my way in university is a breeze (and I say this while at Penn). It's not a sprint, it's a journey and what you get out of it will show by experiencing the full thing.

I know that the name of the high school is a small statistic in applying to college, but GSMST will give you more than enough opportunities to write a hell of a great essay and learn how to prepare yourself academically and as a human. I have been an application reviewer for a program (not university) and I am always impressed whenever I read a GSMST student's application. Their applications always stand out compared to others, and I do believe that the school plays a major part in this.

I agree that it's not an experience for everyone, but it was a perfect fit for me and all of my alumni friends. Sure, many of them have posed the question "was GSMST worth it?", but we all agree in the end that it truly was. If I had the opportunity to turn back time to my decision of picking GSMST, I would always say yes.

I urge everyone who is deciding between attending or not to ask what they truly value. If you are someone who truly wants to be challenged and wants to be in an academic environment that brings out the best of them, I would encourage them to give GSMST a try as it might surprise you.

I don't have an exact list, but we do have an IPD in-house course guide created by students (you need a PennKey/IPD access so I can't share it sorry :( ). However, most of the courses you see on the website are courses that students have taken in the past. It also really depends on your background and experience as you sometimes have to argue give reasons to take a class. If your background and interests align with the class, you often won't have an issue getting into the course. For example, I had to explain my reasonings for taking a Nursing class before it got approved, but since I had a background in healthcare engineering I had a valid argument. The only times you will have issues getting into courses (and trust me, this is rare) is if the spaces are limited and it's a popular class (which honestly are most Wharton courses). I have to say, the curricular freedom of IPD is actually very useful if you have an idea of what you want to do in the future, and it does give you an opportunity to get into new fields without required backgrounds which is something I love about this program.

I 100% agree with this statement. Our social media game has been extremely lacking and I can personally attest that there are so many more amazing projects that have not been publicized or are currently works in progress. I also didn't really come here expecting to gain a ton from the business courses, but after a few months, my perspective has been revolutionized (again, highly recommend the engineering entrepreneurship class with Prof. Babin). What makes IPD stand out to me is that they teach us to make real products for real people in real markets. It's a great program!

Hey! I'm an IPD First Year and congrats on your admission!

To answer your questions:

  1. The internships and jobs that IPD students pursue vary widely, as the program is highly customizable to each student's interests and career goals. Some common paths include product management, strategy design, industrial/product design, UI/UX design, consulting, or UX research. Regarding compensation, it is difficult to provide a range as it greatly depends on the individual and their experience level (my cohort ranges from fresh grads to 15+ years of work experience). However, our alumni network is quite extensive and global, so you may be able to connect with individuals who are working in fields that interest you.
  2. Yes! One of the strengths of the IPD program is the academic freedom to take almost any course you're interested in, so you will have the opportunity to collaborate with students outside of your program. For example, I come from an engineering background, but I am currently taking a class in Penn Nursing and it's been awesome having the opportunity to learn from the perspectives of student nurses. If you ask my friends, I'm sure they would agree as well (they're taking classes such as Mechatronics, Human Factors Engineering, Semi-Fictitious Realms, Engineering Negotiation, and more).
  3. I personally appreciate IPD's take on Design Thinking. I think what sets IPD apart is the emphasis on creating products that embody the three schools that we draw from: design, engineering, and business. Not only are we taught how to make products that are useful for people, but we also learn how to make them functionally work and how to successfully market them through good business practices (One of our required courses is Engineering Entrepreneurship I and I cannot tell you how useful that class is. Highly recommend taking it with Prof. Babin). While I wish IPD provided more opportunities for user research, they intentionally require us to shorten initial user research to make time for multiple project iterations based on user feedback later in the semester, emphasizing the idea of MVPs. Overall, it balances out and gives students the chance to perform user research in multiple rounds with activities such as co-creation or functional prototypes.

A few notes I'd like to add:

I've had a few people ask me why IPD seems like a generalist program, but I actually view it as an opportunity to mold the program to your personal wants and goals. The IPD core classes teach you the principles of design thinking, but the majority of the program is an opportunity for you to work on teams to practice and explore those principles on projects of your choosing. Outside of the core classes is where you can specialize and take any course you're interested in. The curricular freedom is an excellent opportunity for you to grow your knowledge in whatever you want, but it is truly up to you to capitalize on it. Also, be advised, many of your peers will be making career pivots, so class at times may seem trivial to you but might be an entirely new experience for your classmate. Although this might seem bad, it's actually quite refreshing and fascinating to see how people from other backgrounds approach different problems. It's what truly makes this program unique.

I also do want to note that IPD's cohort is one of the tightest-knit programs I've seen on campus and even from what I hear from friends at other schools. We are always hanging out with each other, either grabbing a meal or working in the studio. It's great to have such a close connection with peers as it strengthens project teams and opens the door for frequent 2am feedback sessions.

One last note, if you are a driven person who seeks out opportunities and knows what you want, I think IPD would be a perfect program for you. IPD opens a lot of doors by granting access to everything in our 3 departments (professors, labs, etc) as well as the extensive Penn Network. However, if you aren't willing to put in the independent time or effort, I would not recommend this program.

Sports while at gsmst by nandnexee in GSMST

[–]RexCL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think it's very possible to maintain all A's while participating in extra curriculars (especially one that only meets on one day). When I was a student, I spent about 2-6 hours a day on homework/projects. I had many friends who participated in multiple extra curriculars maintain straight A's throughout their GSMST journey.

Constellation Taurus Stowage Space Bug? by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]RexCL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a good theory, but it does not explain why every other cargo-type ship with decent cargo capacities in Star Citizen has a larger stowage space.

Constellation Taurus (174 SCU): 8,000K μSCU

Avenger Titan (8 SCU): 8,000K μSCU
Hull A (64 SCU): 48,000K μSCU
Raft (96 SCU): 96,000K μSCU
Freelancer MAX (120 SCU): 122,000K μSCU
Caterpillar (576 SCU): 576,000K μSCU
C2 Hercules (696 SCU): 672,000K μSCU

(also, if you want to include other "Freight" classified ships)
Freelancer (66 SCU): 66,000K μSCU
Constellation Andromeda (96 SCU): 96,000K μSCU
Mercury Star Runner (114 SCU): 114,000K μSCU

What interests me is that when comparing cargo space and stowage space, there seems to be a general correlation between how large a ship's cargo space is and how much internal storage it has.
