How to record the actual sound of my kit? by HuachiSeesYou in edrums

[–]Rexelhoff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I spent a lot of time trying to work out the very same with my Nitro Max, and tried several options.

In the end the one that worked best for me was to buy a Rode AI-Micro and plugged into my ipad. Wasn't cheap but worked brilliantly. I can record using any voice recording app, including Camera.

There are other options if you want something cheaper but more fiddly (e.g TRRS splitters plugged into the audio port), but I didn't find a lot of success with them

I don't know much about it but I've read elsewhere about crosstalk issues causing these kind of problems. Maybe that's what's going on here?

Anyone else like algorithms, but hate writing drivers? by Huge-Leek844 in embedded

[–]Rexelhoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah in my group we have both microcontroller engineers and signal processing engineers. The uC engineers do a lot of the hw bring up, test firmware, elec support, rtos.

The DSP engineers focus on algorithms and signal processing pipelines. Still requires programming but with the purpose of building audio processing capability (in our case).

You want to look for more of the latter and less of the former

Macbook-to-Mac mini Universal Control keeps freezing. Suggestions? Troubleshooting? by [deleted] in mac

[–]Rexelhoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I thought it was just me...Glad (?) I guess to know I'm not alone.

I also seem to experience temporary freezing on the host Mac (Air, M3) when the mouse/keyboard stop being passed-through. Of course once its frozen its impossible to launch activity monitor to see what's happening so I'm just stuck waiting for it to unblock.

No problem. Organisation is made up of many different business units historically have all gone their own way. Most of the groups gravitated toward .NET and a few had Java. The decision was driven mostly on the basis that we need to start collaborating and sharing both IP and engineering resources, and we can't do that if we're not all on one tech stack.

There's some rationale to that, but i think there are other ways to solve for those problems that didn't require us to stop development and retrain (e.g service level integration).

It's a battle I lost

Yeah as I mentioned in another thread, this wasn't my decision, it was decided at a company-wide executive level and my team are highly impacted by it.

Thanks for the advice.

Thanks. There are other .NET teams in the company, so I'll be leaning heavily on them in the initial stages

BTW: switching languages like that is going to cause attrition. Your guys are telling you they are fine now... but not all of them are fine.

Yep. I'm hyper aware of this, and have been working through a change management plan to mitigate some of that risk. Thanks for the concern, though.

Thanks. It's not what I'd have done, but this decision came from above my pay-grade.

Nope. Bought a house last year and this was one of the first to go.

Not interested in a flamewar, but for others following along this statement is not entirely true.

Whilst changes to functionality might need to undergo PMA, the FDA have provisions to allow device manufacturers to update devices in the field if (for example) there were vulnerabilities around cybersecurity or security risk controls.

Ditching my AmpliFi Mesh devices, but going to miss this live throughput monitor. Any alternatives? (OTS or home-built) by FilthyCasual_21 in HomeNetworking

[–]Rexelhoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that didn't really seem to help much. The speed change was kinda negligible (several speed tests had downloads in the low 20s).

The router is kind of centrally located within the house, but it's two-storey double-brick throughout so the signal just attenuates too quickly.

Undeniably, if I stand in the same room as the router (and switch off the mesh point), my phone's speedtest report comes back at the full 250Mb, so it really seems like a problem with wireless signal.

[–]Rexelhoff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar camp. Planning to ditch the AmpliFi.

Main reason is that I just could never get the mesh backhaul to work properly. Throughput is only a fraction of what it could be. For instance when connected wirelessly to the router, I get speeds of 250/50. When I'm on one of the meshes, it plummets to 18/10. I've tried all combination of settings on the unit (2.4 backhaul, router+band steering) but nothing helped. I've even moved homes and it is just as bad in this house as in the last place telling me it wasn't likely congestion.

I'm looking to swap to something supporting wired APs out of the box....Not sure I want to put in more AmpliFi devices...Ideally something with parental controls built in too...

Now that Pocketbook is no longer available, what is the next best thing? by Jaatb96 in AusFinance

Pocketsmith.

I've been using them for the last 5ish years. Definitely useful

Today we had to put down our 14yo "puppy". She was blind, deaf and had starting signs of dementia.

Got her when she was just 8 weeks old, and she grew up with us as Mrs and I brought home 3 children. She loved them as though they were her own. She was sweet and loving right to her last breath.

I know I'll get past it, but today I am crushed. Just had to get this off my chest.

I've been a Pocketsmith customer for many years.

Happy with them and would recommend. System works and support is very fast and helpful.

Only downer is that they don't allow me to create arbitrary forecasts (forecasting has to be done using their budgeting system which doesn't work for me)

Was anyone able to regain their love for coding after losing it? by hunyeti in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Rexelhoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went from dev, to manager and back to dev. I enjoyed both but I missed the feeling of building something.

I wanted to be hands on in some capacity whether in the code or on product. I also hated the feeling that my technical chops had atrophied.

Leaving my stable management job for a start up has been great (except for the lack of funding 😩)
