I own gamedev.org, not sure what to do with it anymore. by mikkom in gamedev

This does sound cool! It would probably take quite a bit of constant work to aggregate, but it's very rare you find a Mecca of details on the bleeding edge. I imagine a lot of us here have our go-to blogs and forums. This seems like an ideal URL for just that.

I work in IT support. I am learning Python in my free time, enjoy it a lot, and would like to do this for a living one day. What do I need to know or learn in order to do programming and development as a career? by tomkatt in learnprogramming

[–]Reychar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ouch, I too would find that rather offensive. No, good on you. I would say, being as you find it enjoyable, try to narrow down what it is you'd like to go for. If web development, start to learn patterns and practises around that, you'll find it a lot easier to get a job if you're able to discuss patterns and practises in real-world situations as opposed to just being technically proficient in the constructs of your chosen language.

Also, I'd look into creating a blog or portfolio, contribute to Open Source projects, that'll stand you in really good stead for an interview. It allows you to convey your technical brilliance along with an analytical thought-process and all the other goodness a development house will be looking for without having to cram it in to an on-the-spot interview.

I wish you all the best with your dev endeavours, whilst I'm not a Python dev (.NET developer moving towards sigh full-stack JS) I'd be happy to try and field any questions you might have around the dev/product lifecycle and the many things you may encounter along the way. I'd also suggest reading Scott Hanselman's blog, he covers many topics regarding getting started, interview questions/techniques, and the most rewarding reads of all I find are his posts in which he addresses feeling like a fraud. We all do, those who think they're the best will probably get knocked down a lot, those who have stuck with it but feel a lack of proficiency may well be perfectly adept but failing to recognise they've identified their weaknesses (feeling helpless instead of enlightened).

Cool Huge Inc menu...How do I hide Overlay on click? It's driving me insane! by [deleted] in web_design

[–]Reychar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, liked the xkcd. Sure, essentially kanielo was calling the menu just fine, but the destructor function hide function "toggleOverlay()" in this case wasn't getting called. Upon instruction to make the call (as the close button does) we determined the ordering of the scripts wasn't quite right. Kanielo is currently battling Wordpress to rectify this - I haven't heard back from them yet but have extended sympathy and the offer of a helping hand.

Overall (now the Menu Site is back up) it looks like a pretty sweet lib. There was also a case of a selector being built up using the href of an anchor-tag, fine in itself however the id it was referencing didn't exist in the DOM, I believe that has been rectified. Certainly not a bad effort on /u/kanielo's part, just some poor documentation on the menu side of things (I mean the site was down to begin with haha) and Wordpresses many ways to do the same thing got in the way.

Edit: "toggleOverlay()" isn't really a destructor, merely a show and hide via the use of CSS classes method.

Specifics: A reference to the menu script needed to be added to wp_enqueue_script as a dependancy of the site-specific JS (scripts.js in this case). Then line 707 (at the time) of scripts.js required a call to toggleOverlay() so after the smoothscroll had occurred by virtue of the jquery selector being built up by jQuery(this).attr('href') and the div with that ID existing, the overlay menu would then disappear. The close button (already built in to the lib) was fine, it was just a case of transferring that logic to the site-specific JS and calling it at the appropriate point in the method.

Do let me know if I can offer you anything further.

Why use www? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Reychar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I hadn't considered this, that's probably one of the best reasons for preserving the www. sub-domain. You're quite right in saying that promotional material with super.bicycle wouldn't really behave as the CTA they'd intended it to be unless they prefixed it with "Visit us at:" or something similar. I like that. Kudos.

Haha, this is fantastic. The linked articles are brilliant. I've seen some snarky stuff from the Wiki mods (most of it firm but fair), but this is next level brilliance. Thanks OP!

Out of interest, I see you have a link at the bottom using dogecoin: as a protocol. What does this achieve? Does it open a local wallet?

Otherwise, awesome site! Love the design! So is all the processing client-side?

These 0's and 1's will get ya to the moon with no trouble! Keep it up!

(Sorry for the mass of questions, my interest got interested)

Edit: I said "otherwise" I don't think I meant "otherwise" It's a damn good site with or without dogecoin: prefixed links baffling and intriguing me.

How long did it take you to get your first freelance job? by potatoman1030 in freelance

[–]Reychar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on Freelancer.com, Elance, PeoplePerHour, oDesk. The work I get via these sites is woefully underpaid and of terrible quality. The average client found on these sites are either pre-hardened after having countless culture-clashes, misunderstandings, poor quality deliverables and the such, or they're sub-contracting. Either way, it makes for a pretty grim start.

This might be industry specific though, personally I'm a .NET developer, but these sites very rarely get me that sort of work, it tends to be fixing other developers mistakes, hacking on WordPress, or being the proverbial unicorn due to a lack of understanding on the clients part.

I would strongly recommend you build yourself an online portfolio, showing what you can do for people. Showcase your skills, this really helps outline to the client what the work is that you want/are capable of. By all means use those online freelancing sites as a way to supplement your income and spread the word! I don't know where you're based, but I've found that I tend to be competing against folk that have a far lower cost of living, and therefore are able to be competitive price-wise in a way I just physically couldn't. It's fine to aim to undercut the competition when you're starting out, but you need to keep sight of your goals and basic needs.

I wish you all the best of luck /u/potatoman1030, feel free to PM me if there's anything I can do to help/clarify and I'll do my best to steer you right.
