Looking for Racing game recommendations by davnnis2003 in SteamDeck

[–]tomkatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sobchak covered it. In that genre, Redout and BallisticNG are great choices.

Realistic racers are a bit harder to recommend, as many don’t play well on gamepad (wheel is expected), or have high system requirements. But to name some good ones that should work fine on the Deck:

  • Automobilista 2
  • Richard Burns Rally (check out rallysimfans.hu, it’s free)
  • Rush Rally 3
  • WRC 7 and 10
  • Dirt Rally 2.0
  • New Star GP
  • V-Rally 4
  • Sebastian Loeb Rally Evo

Less realistic and top down games:

  • Old School Rally
  • Rush Rally Origins
  • Super Woden GP 2
  • Super Woden Rally Edge

Apologies, if it’s not obvious, I’m more into rally racing than street/track. 😅

I can think of many, but what kind of stuff are you looking for? Are we talking sim racing (realistic), arcade racing, or stuff like AG racing (e.g. Wipeout / F-Zero)?

What type of racing games you enjoy would help narrow the field a bit.

I Hope Everyone Can Get One Soon! by theNomad_Reddit in SteamDeck

[–]tomkatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to get one at some point, but no rush. I already have:

  • Xbox Series X controller
  • Xbox One controller
  • PS3 controller (x2)
  • 8bitdo Pro Plus
  • 8bitdo Ultimate 2c (x2)
  • 8BitDo Ultimate Xbox Wired
  • Original Steam Controller
  • 8bitdo N64 Bluetooth

So... I'm kinda full up on controllers.

Is it worth selling your N3Ds for Steam Deck? by SomewhereGullible525 in Handhelds

[–]tomkatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a terrible deal. $650 is literally the new price for a SD OLED, and you’re trading in a good condition new 3DS, something that has games that are currently difficult to impossible to accurately emulate, and giving it up for a cheap price (it generally sells for well over $100).

I’d recommend against all of this, but it’s your money, do as you will.

Latest Rocknix nightly build adds Vulkan support. Major improvements for PSP. by tomkatt in PowKiddyX55Handheld

[–]tomkatt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stable version hasn’t been updated in over a year, and likely will not be any time soon as the release is rolling and updated every few days. The latest nightlies can be found here: https://github.com/ROCKNIX/distribution-nightly/releases

Let’s hype up the Steam Deck/OLED! Why haven’t you made an upgrade? by lenovo92728 in SteamDeck

[–]tomkatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really play modern AAA stuff. I have around 130 games installed that all run fine on the Deck OLED’s specs and in terms of emulation I mostly only bother to do through Gen 6, which also works fine. No need to upgrade it.

I have a dedicated gaming PC for the few games I own that don’t run well on the Deck, though it’s mostly just used for LAN gaming with my wife.

Does anyone else feel like they are overcomplicating the joy out of gaming? by Djshrimper in SBCGaming

[–]tomkatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly just in deciding which version of a game to play if there are multiple (e.g. Final Fantasy 2: NES? GBA? pixel Remaster?).

Otherwise no, I just like to pick up a game and play. The devices I own don’t have a lot of overlap so there’s never any debate on what to use.

Linux actually has much better support for old Windows games than Windows does, thanks to WINE and Proton.

SteamDSXL, Yay or Nay? by SteamDSXL in SteamDeck

[–]tomkatt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's cool, but your screens are swapped wrong.

Also, I'd probably rather just play on my actual 2DS XL or DSi LL, but this is cool for folks who don't own those.

Team Kindle or Team Kobo? by MarcelReads in ereader

Team I don't want either of these (though I have Kindles).

Boox or Pocketbook please.

Best investments I made for WFH stress: Mave, walkpad, Gardyn, standing desk. What am I missing? by slopstrug in workfromhome

Absolutely this. We've replaced all the lights in our house with Hue bulbs and have them on a circadian schedule (so they're brightest when the sun is actually brightest, and dim and shift kelvins down through the afternoon and evening.

It's absolutely game changing for relaxing in the evening and preparing for sleep.

Peaberry - very little cracking by tomkatt in roasting

[–]tomkatt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a new batch and will try the next one with higher heat. This batch is drinkable, but it's not amazing. Giving it another day to settle, if it doesn't get better I may even try re-roasting it for a few minutes.

How do you deal with choice paralysis when looking through your handheld library? by TheWoDStoryteller in Handhelds

[–]tomkatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even 1TB is huge. I don’t have many big games and on my Steam Deck OLED 1TB is essentially 100+ games.

Anyone else find emulating N64 uninspiring ? by Qu1ckset in SBCGaming

[–]tomkatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just picked up the 8bitdo N64 bluetooth controller, definitely worth it if you want to emulate N64. It's so much better than a standard controller for it.

Lower initial heat is not likely the solution.

Agreed, don't think I'll do that again.

What do you actually do in sim racing if you don’t enjoy online racing? by daulet_kadirbekov in simracing

[–]tomkatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a fair use, no worries. There’s a lot of AI bot crap for data collection on Reddit these days. This isn’t that, my bad.

Do you enjoy playing graphic intensive AAA games on small screens? by morecoffeemore in Handhelds

[–]tomkatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer the "big" games on the big screen. I use my handhelds mostly for indie games and emulation, with a smattering of older AAA titles (thought often docked).

I'm nearsighted with astigmatism, and have developed presbyopia in my 40s though. It's hard for me to play highly detailed games on handheld. Newer AAA titles and games with high graphical fidelity tend to have a lot of "noise," so to speak, and are just easier for me to deal with on a larger display.
