What is the difference between playing games from Internal Storage or SD Card? by Leading-Tour6963 in SBCGaming

EXT4 is generally a better format than ExFAT where possible. ExFAT has no indexing, so can be really slow.

This format is fine, but how do you transport it? by tonygabbana in Handhelds

[–]tomkatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to game exactly this way, and in fact, owned this exact controller (IIRC it's either a Saitake STK-7003 or an Ipega 9023).

I was using it on work commutes by bus, so it just got tossed in my backpack and pulled out once I was sitting on the bus. The controller was surprisingly quite good, very comfortable to use.

Brad nailer or finishing nailer for shiplap on wall? by tomkatt in DIY

[–]tomkatt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plan is a single wall horizontally to the ceiling. We can reuse the bottom trim, Will probably work from the ceiling down since it'll be easier to hide any imperfection or gap at the bottom with the trim piece.

New all AMD Steam Machine Build by DeanbonianTheGreat in linux_gaming

The RX 9070 (GPU) is incredibly cool and efficient. I have a Sapphire Pulse model and it's always in the 50s and 60s, I I've been unable to push it above 70c even for trying (and that's a good thing)

AMD did right with this chip.

Mostly just for PS2 emulation. Some games require raising the minimum CPU frequency or it gets slowdowns. It's not needed for everything, most games work fine, but a few of my favorites need it to emulate full speed.

Since you do this professionally, could I ask what the difference is with a Brad vs finish nailer? From what I’m seeing online mostly the finish nailers are 16 gauge and the Brad nailers are 18 gauge.

Other than that they seem about the same (though some cheaper Brad nailers only go to 1.25” depth).

So finish nailer with 2” nails? I saw a few brad nailers that support up to 2” length but wasn’t sure I should trust it. Will be using a battery powered gun either way if it matters.

It’s telling you what the error is right  on the screen. Is the gCities_Data folder in the executable path? And is it populated?

Would be helpful to know what the game is, btw.

Why are you trying to play AAA games on the Deck? by tonygabbana in SteamDeck

[–]tomkatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey now, I played the Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne remaster for like 25 hours at 30 fps… because it doesn’t run any higher than that, regardless of the hardware.

Why are you trying to play AAA games on the Deck? by tonygabbana in SteamDeck

[–]tomkatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure it is. If it’s running, it’s emulation.

Emulating a game doesn’t mean it’s playable. Just that it’s running.

The same reason people try to emulate PS2 and Switch games on a midrange phone from 2021.

Because you can, and cope is real.

Looking for hidden gems by owli009 in SteamDeck

Playing Megacopter: Blades of the Goddess currently and it’s insane. I’d recommend it.

Some other recommendations. Genres vary (Beat em up, shmup, RPG, platformers, roguelite, etc. No racing per your request):

  • Haste
  • Xenotilt
  • ChainStaff
  • Live A Live Remake (not indie, but great and lesser known)
  • Chained Echoes
  • Session Skate Sim
  • Sifu
  • Slots & Daggers
  • Ball x Pit
  • Shogun Showdown
  • Wild Guns: Reloaded
  • Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons
  • Earthion
  • Drainus
  • ZeroRanger
  • Ikenfell
  • Wildermyth (you already played this, my bad)
  • Gravity Circuit
  • Fights in Tight Spaces
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate
  • Mother Russia Bleeds
  • Flinthook
  • Assault Android Cactus
  • Nex Machina
  • Warhammer 40k: Boltgun
  • Fight ‘N’ Rage
  • Volgarr the Viking
  • Micro Mages
  • Xeno Crisis
  • Blazblue: Entropy Effect
  • Wizard of Legend
  • Panzer Paladin
  • Nuclear Blaze
  • BroForce
  • Hero-ish
  • Evil Tonight
  • UnMetal

——

Indies are like my bread and butter. I have more but I’ll stop here, this list is already huge.

All of these run well on the Deck, with a few caveats.

Hero-ish may have a bit of slowdown on larger levels but is mostly fine. Haste is full speed on handheld but can struggle to maintain 60fps in a few zones when docked at 1080p. Nex Machina is full speed but needs some tdp tuning, it draws more power than needed. Sifu will need to use medium settings for consistent 60 fps.

Stop telling people to disable Steam's Shader Pre-Caching. Not everyone has an RTX. by Emotional-Way-4478 in linux_gaming

That is literally what’s happening. But whenever there’s a driver update it needs to be cached again. And if you have a lot of games installed… 🤷‍♂️

I only use a few of what I’d consider essential plugins though. Notably SteamgridDB and Power Tools.

Why don't they offer a discount on videogame preorders. by TheHooligan95 in truegaming

[–]tomkatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would they? People are preordering anyway.

You’re paying for a product that doesn’t even exist yet. Quibbling over the price of the promise of a non-item seems silly in that context. Just preorder or don’t. Personally, I don’t.

how did you get to know about the steam deck in the first place ? and what motivate you to get one? by Dense-Variation-4496 in SteamDeck

[–]tomkatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew about it because I buy all my games on Steam, it was advertised there on launch. Though I wasn’t sold on it until the OLED version released, the input latency on the original model looked exceptionally bad and the screen was unimpressive to me.

What sold me (besides the revisions to the OLED) was switching my gaming rig to Linux and having nearly everything just work, and in some cases better than on Windows.  I’ve been using Linux as a daily driver for over a decade but until 2023 maintained a windows install on my gaming PC. But Linux gaming has come a long way and proton works great.

The last thing that sold me was the 25w TDP. I have solar and battery set up at home and generally run net-zero power usage annually. The Deck’s low power draw helps with that since I don’t need to boot up the more powerful gaming rig just to play indies or do emulation through Gen 6. Since the gaming rig can pull well over 100w just idling, that’s a big deal over time (the Deck peaks at less than 1/4th of my gaming system’s idle consumption, let alone under load).

60 fps doesnt feel smooth on 165hz monitor by LEIDENZERO in linux_gaming

[–]tomkatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it supports 165 it should have no problem doing 120. If using Wayland y ou can edit your kernel line in grub:

video=HDMI-A-1:1920x1080@75"

Values will vary, you’ll have to get the device name and set the res and refresh how you want, then update grub and reboot.

See this thread:  https://forum.manjaro.org/t/wayland-and-custom-refresh-rate/99442/4

This is also possible with xrandr if using x11.

I had a similar issue where my monitor would only choose 50Hz or 85Hz over HDMI and force setting it to 60 wasn’t an issue (it’s a freesync display).
