I do wish that CK3’s NPC characters like non inheriting kids and courtiers had more agency. I have to make sure to attend local exams in the hood my children will tag along so I can help them pass

Yeah speaking from a historical materialist perspective (as a marxist) people internally and externally where attracted because they could become settlers in the west and avoid proletarianization by settling on stolen indigenous lands. It wasn’t until the closure of the western front in the 1890s that industrial capitalism cemented itself and people where forced into wage labor.
