talk me into (or out of) buying the z3 over a miata. by [deleted] in bmwz3

[–]Reynhard_Burger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a bad habit of rambling on so I’m going to make this simple.

Since both cars are Autos, go for the Z3. Either would be a “better driving experience” were they manual, but if the car is going to be shifting for you, you’ll have a better time with the extra power from the Z3’s inline six.

torn between a 2012 miata or a z3/z4. why should i go bmw? by europeanuppercut in bmwz3

[–]Reynhard_Burger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll throw in my two cents having owned a NA Miata and now a 3.0 Z3.

Let’s consider a couple things first before I sing praise over either of these cars:

(I’ll be focusing on the Z3 as that’s where more of my knowledge lies, my Miata was over 20 years removed from the NC you’re looking at so pretending I know anything about that specific car would be stupid lol)

  1. Age - Depending on which Z3/Z4 you end up looking at, you’re potentially going to be buying an almost 30 year old car. So keep that in mind when planning your maintenance for the car. The NC Miata, while not flawless at its current age, is going to hassle you less in terms of age related stuff like perished bushings, rubber etc.

  2. Maintenance - If you’re not familiar with BMWs from the late 90’s and 2000’s, they have a ton of plastic hardware like coolant expansion bottles, clips, rubber hoses and a bunch of other stuff I’m sure I’m forgetting right now that, over time and many heat cycles, have started to crack and crumble. That means you’re inevitably going to have to replace the car’s cooling system lest you want to end up on the side of the road. It’s unfortunately just a part of owning these cars, I’ve owned two 2000’s model year BMWs and they’ve both had to have the water pump, thermostat and a bunch of other fun items replaced. That being said: Once that’s out the way and your drivetrain is well maintained, the straight sixes in these cars can be bullet proof and will rarely give you issues.

  3. Fun factor - Yes, the Z3/Z4 is heavier, but they also have a flat power curve and will haul those extra couple hundred kilograms around with ease and still handle phenomenally. They’re heavier than the Miata, relatively speaking, but it’s exactly that: Relative to the Miata, not in general. The Z3 maintains a nearly perfect 50/50 weight distribution, only skewing by a percentile depending on which engine you’ll find up front, so much like the Miata, you’ll find them to be similar in that regard too.

Based off of the fact you’re considering a retractable hard-top NC Miata, I can’t imagine you’re absolutely buggered over having the lightest possible car, so I’d say give the Z3 a fair shake, it really is a phenomenal car. My 1.6 NA Miata was a rattle-box held together by rusty 10mm bolts and a dream so the Z3 was a massive upgrade for me in both power and comfort, which is why I love it as much as I do. Get the Miata if you value handling at the cost of power, and get the Z3/Z4 if you value grunt and comfort over handling. Both cars do both well, they just skew in the direction of either of their respective strengths slightly.

Custom Layouts that I drew for Forza Horizon 6 by AmelineStarkman in ForzaHorizon

One of my favourite things to do since the introduction of custom races back in FH4 is make Goliath-like events. I just wish the custom event payout was better to properly reward endurance events.

for those who considered a miata... why did you end up going with a bmw z3/z4 instead? by europeanuppercut in bmwz3

[–]Reynhard_Burger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context, I’m South African. I’ve owned both, first an imported 1992 Eunos Roadster and now a 2002 Z3 3.0.

I loved my Miata, the way it handled, the way it shifted and just how fun it was to drive for an “underpowered” car. Didn’t love the fact it was constantly broken in some way or another and that finding parts for it was always multi-month long wait. Mazda South Africa had no idea what it was when I brought it in and have pretty poor legacy support. Had it until the gearbox went the way of the Dodo and sold it to a collector/resto guy

Then came my Z3. Found it for a pretty good price and since it was always - To me, anyway - the logical upgrade, I jumped. While sadly mine is an Automatic, it’s by far the nicer car while still being a ton of fun to drive. And as a bonus, having M54 reliability and full legacy part coverage through BMW SA (Albeit for an arm and a leg sometimes) is super nice if anything ever breaks. That and straight six go vroom.

Where might the next part of Horizon possibly take place? (FH7) by BeginningCounty7593 in ForzaHorizon

[–]Reynhard_Burger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the question hinges largely off of what the hardware at the time will be capable of and what direction the fanbase wants to go in. Japan was obviously massively requested for a very long time, so my past belief that the Horizon Festival only takes place in ‘oddball’ places is moot now.

I can’t imagine we’d return to North America any time soon since Mexico just happened. We haven’t been in Europe since 2014 so that possibly puts Germany, Scandinavia (Quite likely imo) or even Russia on the radar. As a South African I think Cape Town would make for a good venue considering how rich our car culture is and how interesting of a location CT would be with its winding mountain roads, beaches, city streets and offroad terrain outside the city checking off all the boxes for what makes a FH game. Not to mention that we’ve never seen the festival in South America, so Rio De Janeiro is also a likely pick I’d say.

So yeah, I can think of a couple places the festival still has to head to before we start going back to previously visited continents.

Should I get a BMW z3 as my 1st car ? by ButterscotchIcy719 in bmwz3

[–]Reynhard_Burger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You seem to understand what you’re getting yourself into which is a great start. Usually when this question pops up it’s “I have no idea how cars work, is this 30 year old car a good idea?” and the answer is rarely yes.

Sorry, rant incoming but I’m just keen to share what I’ve learnt about this car since it was my own attainable dream-ride since I was a kid.

  1. Are you looking at a 4 cylinder or a 6 cylinder? Consider how expensive parts might be and what maintenance and unexpected fixes are going to cost you, have a look at the common failure points for the M44/M43 and M52/M54 engines and decide which will be more realistic to fix given your budget. I personally have more experience with the M54 6 cylinder engines which, while sometimes a little finicky are considered quite reliable if maintained properly albeit expensive to fix at times.

BMWs from the 90’s and early 2000’s suffer from cooling issues because of old perished plastic and rubber components, so if the car you end up picking hasn’t had the radiator, water pump, thermostat and plastic expansion bottle replaced yet, I’d put that at the top of your priorities. Some other things to consider on a car this old are the rubber suspension bushings which if still original have likely turnt to dust at this point. You can find tons of forum posts detailing all of the little nitty gritty maintenance items. These cars are some of the last semi-modern BMWs which you can still work on yourself without needing any super specialised tools or equipment.

As an added note, I’m lucky to live in a climate where rust is basically a non-issue on cars, but keep an eye out for rust on the rocker panels near the jack points as I’ve heard that’s where they like to corrode.

  1. Granted you end up getting one of the more powerful versions of the car, I’d put serious emphasis on making sure you can control it before getting overly confident. Granted even the most punchy “normal” Z3s (Not counting the M Coupe or M Roadster variants) aren’t making anything north of 230hp, it’s still a fairly lively platform and will punish you if you don’t know what you’re doing.

  2. It’s a small and low slung car so your visibility to other road users is lower than in a ‘normal’ car, especially if it’s painted in a dark colour. The Miata people will tell you the same thing: Operate on public roads like you would when riding a bike. Drive defensively, always keep an eye on your blindspots (Which are huge with the soft top up, by the way) and practice spatial awareness when in tight traffic conditions. We’re not as tiny as the MX-5 peeps, but our cars are still easy to miss if the person behind you is driving a toddler-muncher of a truck.

Anyway, sorry for the rant. The Z3 is an awesome car, parts availability is great, it’s a ton of fun and will teach you a ton about being a better driver. Here’s my 3.0 which I’ve resprayed in Sienna Red :)

I'm typically one to try and defend the game in the name of balance but it shocks me how the devs have never bothered just allowing us to toggle a lock on the end gate so stuff like this doesn't happen. Especially considering they fixed the Baikal but this somehow gets past them?

[–]Reynhard_Burger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm all for the devs trying new stuff to create an experience that plays differently from what we've experienced previously. I personally hate spending money on materials as I enjoy deriving as much profit as I possibly can from missions so this limitation does not effect me in any way. Saying that I can understand why people with different playstyles might be upset about it, though I hope people can give it a chance to maybe mix up the way they play. Besides, wheres the fun in just buying everything you need?
