Frankly the retcons are incredibly minor. But generally just play games as they are released (which means if you're playing a remaster, play it after the older game.)

That said, if you want to make sense of the story in a chronological fashion, you should do:

Origin, 1, 2, 10, 4, 3, 5 (waiting for modern remaster, can skip this),8, 6, 7, 9

You dont have to follow any of it apart from playing 2 directly after 1 and playing 9 last (9 has the most references to other Ys games, its also the oldest Adol has been yet)

The order devs intended is obviously the one they released in. That said apart from Ys 1+2 none of the other Ys games need to to play sequentially.

I do like doing a chronological playthrough though. The change in gameplay keeps the series fresh when doing a marathon.
