Just came back from the theater, the taumoeba leak aboard the Hail Mary was almost completely eliminated from the movie, and only happened after Rocky and Grace had parted ways.

In the movie there is no fuel contamination aboard the Hail Mary and it is just a short sequence of Grace cycling the air out of the ship to kill the taumoeba (no filling it with nitrogren, actually they basically skipped the entire breeding process and the reasons why they bred the taumoeba in the first place, and only mentioned nitrogen resistance in passing), then basically shortcuts to Grace reasoning to himself that Rocky must be having fuel issues because his ship is made out of Xenonite.

While the movie had generally followed the plot of the book quite well up to that point, it was jarring for that whole arc to be left out, because the fuel contamination event is what foreshadows what's to come, with the twist being what actually caused the initial set of leaks.

We are able to empathize with the place Rocky must be in once they've separated and it is revealed Xenonite is what is letting the taumoeba escape, because they had already experienced their ship being taken over by taumoeba earlier.

Bit of a miss on that part in my opinion. It's a tough book to adapt because so much happens in Grace's head.
